Win ston-Salem. passed away Oct. 14 at Forsyth Medical Center unexpectedly. She was born on Jan. 5, 1939, in Bradenton. Fla.. the daugh ter of Francis Williams. She was affectionately known to her family and friends as "Ann." She was a member of St. Peter's World Outreach Center and was a retired registered nurse. She was preceded in death by her mother. , She is survived by and leaves to cherish her loving memory: six daughters, Carol (Paul) Linton. Victoria (James) Friend, both of Winston-Salem. Donald lived his entire life in Winston-Salem and attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools. He i was also a member of the Poke Easy Club. Donald was a bless ? ing to ()is family and they dearly loved him. He possessed a ' sweet, obedient spirit. Donald was preceded in death by his ' father. James Cassaberry and a brother. HAIR5TON Mr. Harvey Dee Hairston, Sr., formerly of 1400 Gholson Avenue, Winston-Salem, passed away Oct. 14 at Forsyth Med ical Center. He was born on April 22; 1928 in Forsyth County to Ethel Marshall and Harvey Hairston. Mr. Hairston lived in Winston Salem all of his life except for five years when he served in the United States Army, WWII 1945-1948. After serving in the Army and returning home he was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as a machine operator where he retired after 44 years of service. He was a member of Second Calvary Bap tist Church for over 50 years and served on various boards and comnlittees within the church. He was one of the oldest broth ers with over 50 years in the Salem Lodge #139 Masons PHA. where he was a Past Master and was also a former member of the Phoenix Social Club. Preceding Mr. Hairston in death was both of his parents; one sister. Evelyn Jefferies and a brother. James Hairston. Mrs. Hairston is survived by and leaves to cherish his lov ing memory, his wife, Lillie of 57 years; two sons, Harvey. Jr. (Saundra) of Little Rock. AR. Kevin Reid (Kim) of Knoxville. Mrs. Harvey was a native and lifelong resident of Winston Salem, born on April 24. 1929. the daughter of Susie Rorie. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board, the Missionary Board, and served on the Finance Committee for 30 years. She was a devoted home maker. NC. passed away Oct. 15 in Rural Hall. NC. He was born Sept. I, 1950 in Rock ingham County, NC. He w as a 1968 graduate of London High School in Walnut Cove. NC and was a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1969-1976. He was an employee of Sara Lee in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his faithful and devoted w ife. Williams, 1100 Newport Street, Winston Salem. passed away Oct. 12 at his residence after an extended period of illness. He was born to the late Re. Hasker Williams and the late Eula Thomas Williams on Aug. 17, 1929 in Win ston-Salem. After graduating from Atkins High School in 1950. Ervin Williams began a successful career in the United States Air Force after 22 years of loyal service as a Staff Sergeant and returned to Winston-Salem to be with his family. He later retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after several years of service and from the Stevens Center a few years later. Ervin was a faithful member of Zion FBH Holiness Church for several years and later became a member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, which he loved. He was a very loving and devoted brother, uncle and friend to many. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. Ervin was preceded in death by his brother. Richard Williams and his nephew. Mr. Hazel, the son of the late Patsy Brown and Curley Ray. died after an extended illness at his home on Thurmond Street, He graduated from Carver High School and later attended Forsyth Technical College receiving certification in Respiratory Thera py. He retired from Forsyth Hospital after 35 years of faithful service. Mr. Brown also served in the United States Army dur ing WWII and received campaign medals, one with three Bronze Stars for his service to his country in the military. Hazel Brown leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 58 sears. Eloii^c Brown; one daughter. Sharon Brim of Winston-Salem; eight sons. Sylviski Van (Brenda) Brown. THOMAS Mr. Russell Thomas March was ushered into the hands of God on Oct. 17 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 27, 1921 in Forsyth County to Willie Odester March and Leland Brown. He graduated from Atkins High School and attended A&T University for two years w hile he served in the U.S. Army during World War 11. He received the EAMET Campaign Medal with three bronze stars and the Victory Medal. Mr. March was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post #15034. He was a machine operator with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company where he retired after 35.7 years. Mr. March was of the Baptist faith. HE enjoyed volunteering for the Samaritan Soup Kitchen before his health started to decline. He gave generously to various charities and Bible Colleges. His former wife, Pauline, preceded him in death. He leaves to cher ish his memory: three daughters. Cheryl March of the home. Williette March of the city. Friendship will observe its 89th church anniversary Oct. 24 and 26 SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Friendship Baptist Church will observe its 89th church anniversary in a two-day Cele bration on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 26 at II a.m. and 4 p.m. The 11 a.m. service focus theme is "Family and Friends," with special recog nition of attending sick and shut-in members. A combined choir will present the music, and the pastor will deliver the message. Guest speaker for the 4 p.m. service will be Dr. Clary L. Phelps Jr.. pastor, and con gregation of Gethsemane Mis sionary Baptist Church, Greensboro. Phelps is a native of Forsyth County and received his high school diploma from East Forsyth High School. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Winston-Salem State University, his master of divinity degree from Hood Theological Seminary and his doctor of ministry degree from United Theological Seminary. He was licensed at Friendship Baptist Church and ordained by the Rowan Asso ciation in 1978. He is a member of and involved in various religious and civic organizations. He has received many outstand ing awards, including N.C. NAACP Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award in 1994 and the James B. Hunt Governor's Certificate of Appreciation in 1997. Phelps is married to Teresa Phelps, and they have two daughters, Terea and Maria. Other program participants include special recognition of church family sick and shut-in members by Sandra Arm strong, the necrology candle ceremony by Barbara Carvana and introduction of speaker by Rev. Mount Sinai will present dinner theater titled 'Men on the Wall' SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The cultural arts ministry of Mount Sinai Full Gospel Deliverance Center will pres ent its annual dinner theuter Nov. I from 5 to 9 p.m. at the File-Goodwin Center. 950 File Street. The production, titled "Men on the Wall." is the melodramatic story of real men trying to keep their bal ance through life's unbalanc ing situations and discovering that through it all. there is a real God to help them. Joyce McMillan, the gifted playwright and director of the cultural arts ministry, has assembled a cast of 21 multi^ talented men to expound on and bring to life the words given to her by God. This is the fifth play pro duction for the cultural arts ministry, the most recent being the musical "Steadfast." The plays produced by the ministry speak to the human o condition, going straight to the heart of what people con tend with every day. and are well attended by many peo ple in the community.
