Dr. Suber The Tradition Continues at First Baptist SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE First Baptist Church on Highland Avenue plans to resume its Christmas tradition this year by presenting its Outdoor Live Nativity Pageant. The pageant will be presented on the church lawn Dec. 7 and 8 from 7 - 8:30 p.m., by disciples of the congregation, under the direction of the Women's Progressive Club. The Outdoor Live Smith Nativity Pageant has been a tradition at First Baptist, and members of the Women's Progressive Club decided to resume this tradition in the memo ry of Louise Smith, the director of the pageant since its inception in 1963. Smith was also a member of the church's Women's Progressive Club. During the 1960's, Highland Avenue and the surrounding area was mostly a residential area, along with some businesses and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospital was across the street. Crowds came to see the pageant and traffic had to be directed by police officers. However, the audience number began decreasing with urban renewal. It is hoped that community interest and support will be revitalized. The pageant will consist of three scenes, each lasting about 30 minutes. The costumes for the pageant were designed by Rev. Mary Coleman of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Taped Christmas carols will provide the back ground music, and the Rev. Glen Pettiford, Assistant Pastor, of First Baptist Church, will provide the narration. ' The Outdoor Live Nativity Pageant at First Baptist will be free and open to the pub lic. The church is located at 700 North Highland Avenue. The Outdoor Live Nativity Pageant has been staged at the church for decades.
