Religion Calendar Starting Aug. 21 Youth Conference The "There's Got To Be More!" Youth Conference hosted by Youth Pastors Jayson and Mia Sloan of St. Peter's Church & World Outreach Center will take place Aug. 21-22. The program is co-hosted by Pastor Randy Goudeau of The Gathering Church of New York. The Aug. 21 events are at 7 pjm. On Aug. 22, there will be activities at 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 pjn. This conference is free and open to the public. Minister^ receiving their official ordination are: the Rev. Robert Carter, the Rev. Rhonda Hammond, the Rev. Marsha Fielder, the Rev. Melanie Hill, the Rev. Lakeisha Hill, the Rev. Kezra Marshall and the Rev. Birdie Rush. The service will be held at 4 p.m. All were ordained through the prestigious Rowan Baptist Association. They had to pass a rig orous written and oral examination by the ordination council of the association. Prior to their exams, they com pleted a mandatory course of instruction created and implement ed by Union's pastor. Rev. Dr. Sir Walter L. Mack Jr. The course entails the study of topics including but not limited to general Bible knowledge. Old Testament and New Testament, Church History, Baptist History, Black Baptist History, Baptist Church Polity and Practices, Theology, HermeneutiCri and Homiletics. Church's musical to start tomorrow SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE A world where animals talk and act like humans, while teaching lessons in the difference between right and wrong, will come to life when the Men's Fellowship of Wentz Memorial United Church of Christ presents an original musi cal comedy "Remus," written and directed by Flonnie Anderson. Shows will be tomorrow (Aug. 22) and Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the church, which is at 3435 Carver School Road. The Reverend Ren6e Griffin is pastor of Wentz. Flonnie Anderson Anderson's musical fable is based on the famed "Uncle Remus Tales" by son-of-the South author Joel Chandler Harris, who heard the tales as a boy. while listening to them with slave children. He later record ed those stories when he became a man. The tales are taken from African folktales brought to the New World by slaves, who primarily settled in the Southeastern United States. Adult slave's both entertained and taught their children the valuable life lessons. Usually each tale ended with a moral or lesson to be learned that reminded the children of the difference between right and wrong. "This production provides an opportunity for family fun," said Anderson. "It's a fun show with a series of serious mes sages that the young and not so young can appreciate." The production is under musical direction of Dr. Connie McKoy, the production's music arranger and accompanist. The cast includes: Quamin Finney, Roger Kirkman, Deirdre Anderson, Terren Dillard, Annette Scippio.Tim Howell, Carl Martin, Chloe Griffin. Quamin Finney as Uncle Remus. The young people of the Whole Village Rites of Passage program. Young kings and queens of Emmanuel to perform SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE . The students of the "Whole Village Rites of Passage" program, under the direction of Nan Vernita Terry, will present "The Journey: African Kings and Qu^ns" on Friday, Aug. 29 at the Anderson Center on the campus of Winston Salem State University at 7p.m. This night of theatre is a part of the Emmanuel Baptist Church's Maafa commemoration, which cele brates the ancestors of African Americans and the survivors of the Middle Passage into the enslavement. This historical pageant of African kings and queens will serve as a fundraiser for the groups upcoming performance at the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) Conference in Birmingham, Ala. in October. Many historians, artists and scholars will participate in this conference. Historian and scholar Dr. Carter G.
