Background: James continued to address his lessons on "Christian behaviors" to the twelve scattered tribes (Jewish converts) among the nations (1:1). After addressing the two types of wisdom in 3:13-18, he acknowledged that togeth er with the tongue earthly wisdom caused strife in the community. The aim was to get his readers to understand that woriaiiness pulled them away from God and led to all types of confusion. In chapter four of his epistle, he considered the root causes and remedies for the confusion and the supremacy of God as Judge. Lesson: As one of the leaders of the Jerusalem Church (Acts 15), James has knowledge of the actions of the believing community. His epistle addresses those behaviors that do not coincide or parallel the teachings and life of Jesus. It is impor tant for them to take seriously their representation of Christ. Their lives should say to the world, "I have submitted to God". The believing communi ty should not look like, act like, nor think like the world! The community is to strive for love, har mony, mercy and humility. James 4:1-6 breaks down the cause of strife in the church. Their indi vidual and corporate desires not being met fuel the strife. Those unmet desires cause them to commit murder. Remember that tongue from last week? When this type of "fighting" goes on, individuals lose sight of what's important - God's Will! "The reason they're coming up empty-handed is because they are not asking Him for what they want" (Echoes Adult Commentary). James also states that if they ask; their motives are polluted due to selfishness. He is very harsh by verse 4 when he calls them adulterous people. He is refer ring to their unfaithfulness to God (Old Testament). Their behavior says that their concern Mildred Peppers S u n d ay School Lesson is for the world first and not God. All isn't lost, few James reminds them that God's grace is extended to those who will repent and be humble- the rem edy! James quotes Proverbs 3:34 as he encourages them to submit to God. Submission means to give over to God. A believer can't fight worldliness alone. Submission also implies worshiping Him in spirit and in truth (be for real) When believers give their lives to God and worship Him honestly their relationship with Him is stronger. There is no room for being double minded. The temporary joys and pleasures of the world will not last but the love and peace of God will The chapter ends with James reminding them that God alone is the Supreme Judge. The in house confu sion escalated to bitter , words. Those words lead to judging each other. James points out that God is the only One with that authority! To assume the role of judge puts them above the Law. Heaven forbid. Application: Have you ever considered "why evil exists?" You scholars recognize when it crept into the Garden and wrecked the right relationship between God and humanity. Is it real today? From all corridors of the world there is 9 resounding yes! Why ? Just as in days of old, selfish ambitions were pursued instead of the Will of God. The epis tle of James speaks to believers as they interact with each other. Church fights are bad and many of us carry the scars or we inflicted them. Did we stop to ask; "Does this represent Christ? What message are we sending to non believers or babes in Christ?" James forces us to look at the person in the mirror. After doing so all that can be done is to humbly and sincerely repent receiving God's Grace. Can we judge others? No! We are sinners saVed by Grace. There is no room to judge others. Can evil be stopped? Submit to God drawing clos er apd closer to Him and He to you. We must rec ognize the temporary worldly pleasures and the eternal things of God. Do we represent Him well?
