One by one, they pressed their way in the doors of the Arts Based Elementary School, one afternoon last week, owners in tow. Throughout the lobby, chil dren's squeals of excitement and coos of adoration marked each canine's entry. Once inside, a fury of wag ging tails and eager barks dominated the space, as the children scrambled to pat each hairy head. It was billed as "The Kids Who Love to Read Bring their Dogs to School" event. The brainchild of Author Leigh Somerville McMillan, the event was a unique promotion for her debut novel, "It All Started With a Dog." "We really wanted to cre ate something that would get kids excited about reading and also about being a pub lished author," explained McMillan's publicist, Cheryl Schirillo. "Anything you can do to get kids excited about reading and writing is wonderful." Students and families at ABES, a publicly-funded charter school, were invited to bring their dogs to the school at the end of the school day on -March 25, to mingle with the other dog lovers and learn a little about what it takes to become a novelist.
