Playwright and actor Daniel Beaty has been on a whirlwind journey ever since his block buster one-man show, "Fmprnpnrp-^pp " hpramp a standout among audiences and critics alike. Beaty showed his range as an actor in the play, por traying dozens of characters in the show, which centers around the reactions of modern New Yorkers as a slave ship appears in the Hudson River. / Emergence-See caught Tire after Beaty performed it at the 2005 National Black Theatre Festival. The next year, he had a sold-out off Broadway run at the The Public Theater, for which he took home the ^ 2007 Obie Award for Excellence in Off-Broadway Theater for Writing & Performing and the 2007 AllDELCO Award for Solo Performance. By popular demand, Beaty brought Emergence-See" back to the NBTF in 2007. In "Through the Night," Beaty uses his trademark brand of music, poetry and dialogue to play six generations of men plus the people who love them. The show is written by Beaty and directed by unaries Kanaoipn \ Wright. \ Television viewers \ may recognize Yale graduate Beaty from / nis appearances on / HBO's "Russell / Simmons Presents Def Poetry." His stellar abil ities as a spoken word artist earned eeatty tne 2004 Grand Slam Champion at the world famous Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in New York. Later this year, Beaty is expected to debut "Breath and Imagination," a stage show about tne life of Roland Hayes, who was the first world renowned African American concert singer. He is also slated to perform "Through the Night" off-Broadway. As if that wasn't enough, the Showtime Network has hired Beaty to create and co-executive produce a half-hour television series. He has also been commis sioned to write a screenplay for Spitfire Productions. Director Randolph-Wright's plate is also full. He just finished directing the highly-anticipated film version of the popular gospel play, "Mama I Want to Sinq." The movie, which Randolph-Wright also wrote, stars R&B diva Ciara, Lynn Whitfield, Patti LaBelle, Juanita Bynum, Hill Harper and Billy Zane. Randolph-Wright, who wrote and produced the acclaimed Showtime series "Line's," also directed the award-winning inde pendent film, "Preaching to the Choir." He turned Greensboro writer Craig Marberry's book "Cuttin' Up, which features the stories of barbers from around the nation, into a popular stage play. A national tour of "Cuttin' Up is slated. Randolph-Wright already has Daniel Beaty had huge success with his stage productions. His play "Blue," which starred Phylicia Rashad, Diahann Carroll ana Clifton Davis, broke box office records at Arena Stage and Roundabout Theatre in New York and the Pasadena (Calif.)
