Students build robot for upcoming competition . it SinX'lAL K) 1HL ( HRONK 1.1 The Jacket Integrated Acadeni) at Carver High School will compete in a regional robotics competition from April -7? 9 in Raleigh. Team Yellow Jacket is coached by teacher I abulia Moser and Lloyd Strachan. a Carver math teacher. Laura \1urdock, Carol Poe, Alisa Poe and Connie Fletcher serve as the team's parents. Team Yellow Jacket is a part of the NC FIRST <l*or Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics program, which is supported by JC Pennes and NC 4 H. Students have learned the ins and outs ot robotics at pre-competition events in Raleigh. Team Yellow Jacket has partnered with competition veter ans. Team Platypi of Colfax. The team has been extremely helpful in the com pletion of Team Yellow Jacket's robot. On Monday. Feb. 21, Team Yellow Jacket held a program to showcase its finished robot. The event was attended by managers from the local JC Penney, faculty members, students from Winston-Salem State University, repre sentatives from NC 4-H. a representa tive from Team Platypi and parents. The robot was shipped to the FIRST organization on Tuesday. Feb. 22 for inspection. Feb 18 as they pre vented "Apollo Sight" in the Ardmore Auditorium. More than 150 witnessed the show, which was emceed by lerrell Barber. Darius Taylor served as the deejay and announcer and Ashley Bright acted as the hostess. The KC'I Dancers strut ted dow n the aisle dressed in cheetah print leotards as they moved to the beat of "The Pink Panther" theme. Once thev reached the stage, thev danced through a med ley of R B and hip-hop hits .is the audience cheered them on. I he singers delivered powerful stilus and duets. Dat'Trell Ingram performed an original song called "Confused V sgniean Jerrell Bather Rippy received a standing (nation lor her rendition of "Who You Are" h\ Jessie J. Quanesha Hyncs graced the stage to sing "His Eye is on the Sparrow," and Cory Plowden and Dai'Juan King performed a duet of "Beauty is Her Name" by Dru Hill. The Liquid Color Band wowed the crowd with "Use Me" by Bill Withers. Donald Hart and Lit Kevin Hart danced to "Teach Me How to Dougie." Spoken word artists also rocked the house. Cleopatra K ing slammed "My Letter to Wayne." a poem criticizing rapper I il" Wayne. Kevonna Morgan remembered the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in her poem "Disaster City." Charles Simmons read a poem enti tled "If 1 were Your Tears" and Mitchell Harris Jr. did his poem. "Think." Each participant received a certificate of ach i e v e ment. K Britiani Parker. 22. of Winston-Salem, has received a NASC'AR Diversity Internship Program Award for the work she did last summer with The NASCAR Foundation in Charlotte. The award is in recognition of exem plary personal effort to incorpo rate diversity in the motors ports Industry. "I still can't believe it." Parker said. "I'm elated to know that NASCAR selected me for such a prestigious recog nition. It's truly an honor to have interned with the NASCAR Foundation last summer and to be recognized for the NASCAR Diversity Internship Program Award." Parker served as lead coordinator for a Purker NASCAR Foundation-sponsored event at the NASCAR Hall of Fame that drew 3.000 inner-city youth and 1. 000 business commu nity members together to celebrate summer learning and the Freedom Schools Program. She also assisted with NASCAR Day projects, includ ing event planning and project coor dination of the Ronald McDonald playground built in Kansas City and provided coordination and support for events such as the Rusty Wallace Roast in Iowa. The internship took place in the summer of 20 10. following Parker's graduation from Winston-Salem State University with a B.A. degree in mass communications.
