Girl Scouts earn Gold Awards
SPI CIAL TO THE CHRONICLE ..
Forsyth County Girl Scouts Carlie
Stafford und Heather Hill have earned
Girl Scout Gold Awards.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the
highest earned award for Girl Scouts
grades 9-12. It follows in the footsteps
of the Golden Eaglet, First Class and
Curved Bar awards - previously the
highest awards in Girl Scouting.
It is a reflection of the dedication
and determination of each recipient.
After the minimum requirements are
completed, the Gold Award project is
the culmination of a girl's demonstra
tion of self-discipline, leadership abil
ity, time management, creativity, ini
tiative and a significant mastery of
skills. Each girl must dedicate a mini
mum of 65 hours to planning and
implementing her project, which must
benefit the community and have a long
lasting impact.
Stafford, the daughter of Dickie
and Debbie Stafford of Winston
Salem. led groups in creating a fabric
bereavement heart for grieving parents
in memory of losing a child in early
pregnancy. She also organized a col
lection of clothing and toiletry items
that were donated to Forsyth Medical
Center.
Hill, the daughter of Rodney and
Diane Hill of Kernersville and mem
ber of Troop 40257, held self-defense
classes at R. J. Reynolds High School
last spring. The classes centered on
helping improve the confidence and
awareness of students at R. J.
Reynolds. Students were taught meth
ods of defending themselves when
confronted in crowded or secluded
areas. The classes helped students
realize that when confronted with a
potentially dangerous situation it is
better to move out of harm's way.
