Scholarships, awards presented at Spanish Nite SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE More than 400 people attended the Hispanic League's 12th Annual Spanish Nite Scholarship Awards Gala on April 9. Emceed by Carmen Canales and Luis Batista, this bilingual, formal-attire event featured author Oscar Hijuelos, who gave the keynote address. Entertainment was provided by Orquesta GarDel and DJ Edgar Menendez. The annual event raises money for scholarships for local students. In addition, proceeds from the silent auc tion, raffle tickets and photo sales during Spanish Nite raised $6,000 to benefit the Hispanic League. The Hanesbrands, Inc. Hispanic Leadership Award was presented to Carlos Patifio for his exemplary contributions and leadership in the Hispanic/Latino com munity. Angel Cedillo was chosen as the winner of the $500 raffle. Carlos Patino receives his award from Allison Norton-Rimron of Hanesbrands . Atkins, Carver and Paisley will once again present the Big 4 Golf Tournament and Walk and Health Screening. The golf tour nament will be held Saturday, May 7 at the Winston Lake Golf Course. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and Tee Time is at 9. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served and trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. WSSU lends a hand at Hanes Hosiery Rec SPBCIAI TO I HC CHROMCl I Winston-Salem State University Professor Angela Hart man and some of her Therapeutic Recreation stu dents recently visited Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center. The WSSU Therapeutic Recreation team held a Fun Day at the Center as part of a class project. The WSSU students who participated included Ashley Dawson, Markela Batts, Tiffany Carter, Precious Churchill, Kywana Corbet, Crystal Mitchell and Andrea Parker. The WSSU students planned games and social activities for the kids at the Center. They also provided snacks. The children and stu dents had a great time laugh ing, talking and playing together. The event ended WSSU student Ashley Dawson interacts with kids. with the students and kids dancing together as a group with the help of a Nintendo Wii game. Center Director Art Blevins says that Professor Hartman and the students will continue to be part of the Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center and will be doing more activities there in the near future. The Center now enjoys student volunteers from Wake Forest University, WSSU and Forsyth Technical Community College.
