Parents trained to be advocates for their kids | Travis SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Parents learned how to become effective decision making partners in their children's education earlier this month. Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools held its first Parent Leadership Institute for parents of stu dents who attend Title I Schools. The daylong work shop was led by Dr. Wesley Carter and focused on par ent leadership development. understanding school improvement plans, parent school-student compacts and parents as advocates. Parents worked in teams to come up with rec ommendations that will be shared with school admin istrators. Carver High School Principal Ronald Travis took time out to attend the training with Carver parent representa tives and added value from an administrator's perspec tive. The WS/FCS Title I Director Pasty Squire and Parent Involvement Coordinator Sharon Frazier, will continue to support parent leaders in being advocates and part ners. Parents will meet quarterly as a part of the Title I Parent Advisory Council and will likely serve as School Improvement Team members at their children's schools. A d r i e n n e Smith and Alejandro Sandoval, parents attending the Leadership Institute said, "[We] are grate fill for nnnnr. ? *"* ?- "ft"' tunity to learn to be effec tive leaders and partners with our children's schools. We feel that we are being given a voice to help schools understand what parents want and need, and the opportunity to under stand what schools want and need from us as par ents... we feel included." The parents also expressed sincere interest in partnering with the schools and the district to create, "welcoming schools, improvements in teacher-parent communica tion, high expectations for their children from Pre-K through high school gradu ation, and relationships with community organiza tions that provide informa tion and referrals for family services." On Thursday June 13, 62 School Parent Involvement Coordinators, teachers or other school staff attended a similar training to leant and dis cuss effective parent involvement strategies. Shalom fundraiser The Shalom Project will host its annual ice cream social fundraiser, "The Big Chill," in celebration of National Ice Cream Day on Sunday. July 21 at Grace Court Park, 931 West 4th St., from 3-6 p.m. Admission is $5 per adult, $10 per family of 4 and $3 per child. Funds raised go to The Shalom Project, which provides a free medical clinic, a cloth ing closet, a food pantry and weekly community meals to West Salem residents. Thorn Air Force Airman Kelsie D. Thorn graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. TL. _! I.J ? . i ne airman completed an inten sive, eight-week program that included training in military disci pline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Thorn is the daughter of LaDia Thorn of Winston-Salem and Eric Thorn of Morgantown, W.Va. She is a 2012 graduate of Reagan High School. Army National Guard Pfc. Kourtney D. Slater has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, phys ical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises. Slater is the daughter of Bridget Slater and niece of Darnell Slater of Winston Salem.
