I Bachelor Benedict Club supports E-Girls SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Bachelor Benedict Club, Inc. has given E-Girls (Empowering Girls in Real Life Situations) a donation of $1,000. Club President Ron Hutton, Treasurer Ward Miller and member Joe Crocker heard about E Girls through Mona Lovett, E-Girls' Grant and Fundraising chairperson. ? "After learning about what E-Girls is doing in our community for young girls, the Bachelor Benedict Club voted to give their yearly donation to support E-Girls," said Hutton, adding that club members voted unani mously to support E Girls. Founded by Cheryl Ingram, E-Girls offers mentoring programs and other forms of support for young girls throughout the city. The Bachelor Benedict Club is a nation al social organization whose objective is to pro mote and perpetuate the highest moral standards and the social ideals of the community. Chapters are located in a number of cities throughout the United States. It was organized during a time of racial segregation and unrest, founded in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1902 by several young Black men looking for social outlets. The Bachelor Benedict Club of Winston-Salem was founded in 1929. During the '20s and '30s, it became an important social and networking source for African Americans. The members, during that period, helped shape black Winston Salem. The Wins'ton Salem chapter continues to support organizations in the community. Goodwill awards academic scholarships to area students SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina has awarded scholarships for aca demic achievement to the chil-. dren of nine Goodwill employ ees through the Dr. Bob H. Greene College Scholarship Program. The recipients, all attending accredited universities or insti tutions of higher education in the fall, are Brandon Barnette, Brianne Barnette, Kyra Brown, Michael Carpenter, Carlie Cunningham, Phil Do, Autumn Hatley, Kaylin Haymore, Luke Haymore, Sidney Jackson, Cody Locklear, Maggie Lyons, Kimberly Melton, Tyler J. Miller, Rae Riche. Natalie Runser, Mackenzie Slater and Myracle Stevenson. Goodwill's Board of Directors established the schol arship fund to honor the late Or. Greene's years of dedica tion to Goodwill and in recog nition of his longevity of serv ice to North Carolina acade mia. The award is intended to not only further the education of aspiring students, but also recognize and assist those stu dents who demonstrate involvement in their communi ty and represent the values of Goodwill. "The Bob H. Greene schol arship reassured me that my education would be covered, and with this degree that 1 will complete in 2014,1 will be able to help others just as the won derful people behind this scholarship helped me," said Sidney Jackson, a senior at East Carolina University. "Words cannot express how grateful I am to have been selected for this opportunity I and I thank you all for such a blessing." To be eligible, scholarship candidates must have a parent currently employed by Goodwill, a record of commu nity service, meet specific aca demic requirements, and be either a current student at an institution of higher learning or a graduating high school senior enrolling in an accredited insti tution of higher learning for the following fall semester. The application process for the scholarship includes sub mission of an essay discussing one of three possible topics along with two letters of rec ommendation, one from a teacher or counselor, and one from a supervisor or communi ty leader. 1 Photos by Todd Luck The Class celebrates their birthdays with a dance. Atkins from page HI well as charitable ones, such as adopting families for the holidays and hosting clothing giveaways for the homeless. The class also donated money to help students at Ashley Elementary School fund a trip to Washington. D.C. A por tion of the proceeds from its golf tournament also go to a worthy cause.This year. $1,000 was donated to Winston Salem Prep, which has inhabited the old Atkins High building on Cameron Avenue since 2004. "We give back to the community because the community was good for us in the days of segregation and integration," said Renee Phillips, the secretary for the City of Winston Salem. Like Phillips, many members of the class have accomplished much in their 60 years of life. The class has doctors, lawyers, engineers and other professionals. Phillips believes the success that she and her class mates achieved is a testament to the teachers at Atkins. "The teachers prepared us for life," she said. IN MEMORY OF VETERAN ELI FRANK JACKSON 1945-2013 To Honor Our Deceased Veteran Eli F. Jackson Burial and Honors was conducted at the Salisbury National Cemetery, on Friday, June 28, 2013. Memorial Service and Military rites were held by U. S. Military on Tuesday July 16, 2013 at Trinity Glenn Nursing Home. Eli Jackson was a veteran of the United States Army and United States Air Force and we salute him for his dedication to his country.
