Scholarships given by Pan-Hellenic Council SPECIAL "to rut CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council recently awarded $500 scholarships to Tatyana Green and Brandon Feaster, well-deserving seniors who have achieved tacademic success while serving their ? communities. Tatyana is a student at Early College of Forsyth, where she is an active member of Crosby Scholars, the yearbook staff, the Publishing Club and the Movie Making Club; she is also a recruiter assistant for her school. Tatyana is active as a volun teer in several organizations, including AIDS Care Services, the Ronald McDonald House, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Lend a Helping Hand Fundraiser. Brandon is a student at Reagan High School, where he is active in Crosby Scholars, Athletes for Change and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In addition, he has held leadership roles on the soccer and basketball teams. Brandon has also demonstrated a willingness to help others by serving as a volunteer with Stop Hunger Now, the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity. Both scholarship recipients have been inducted into the National Honor Society and plan to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council is a col laborative organization com prised of representatives from nine fraternities and sororities - Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta. Iman Moore is the president of the council. The members of the Scholarship Selection Committee are Carol Mitchell (chair), Deborah Barr-Cloud, Emory Jones, Stanley Mitchell and Sonjia Samuels. Garden Club holds Celebration Lunch SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Garden Club Council, a non-profit organization consisting of 23 local garden clubs in the y Winston Salem/Forsyth County area, held its first ever Celebration Lunch on Friday, May 9 at Old Town Club. More than 120 garden club members attended. Nancy Spencer, a long-time member of the Flower Lore Garden Club, received the Wava Howard Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award is given in honor of Mrs. E. R. (Wava) Howard to a liv ing member of the Garden Club Council who has done the most over a period of years to further its projects and objectives. Howard, who celebrated her 100th birthday this year, was present to see the award given to Spencer. Anne Butler, a Council Advisory Board member and member of the Evergreen Garden Club; Sherry Hester, Council Treasurer and member of the Forest Garden Club; and Trish Sumners, president of Lewisville Garden Club; each won 2014 Outstanding Volunteer Awards. Allison Watts, and member of the Lawndale Garden Club of Winston Salem, won the Nancy D. Sherk award for Achievement in Beautification. The award was presented by Helen Holtzwarth, a member of the Full Sun Part Shade Garden Club and the daughter of the late Nancy D. Sherk. The Garden Club Council was organized in 1932 to help "protect, preserve and beautify our environment." Today, the Garden Club Council includes more than 800 members from 23 garden clubs - Audubon, Club of 20 Gardens. Dogwood, Evergreen, Flower Lore, Flowers & Friends, Forest, Forest Evening, Full Sun, Part Shade, Garden Study, Hope Valley, Lawndale, Lewisville, Little Greens, Old Salem, Shamrock. Sheffield Gardeners, Spade & Trowel, Town & Country, Twin City, Weeds & Seeds, West End and Westwood. The Garden Club Council is headquartered at 100 Reynolda Village and operates the Garden Boutique at Reynolda Village. Lynn Jennette is the 2013-2015 president of the Garden Club Council. Rivers releases book SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Martha Rivers has released her new book, "Who Flipped the Script." It tells the story of a beautiful, single, ambitious woman and her search for love. Kivers - a mother ot tour and a grand mother of eight, is a teacher, evangelist child advocate, and the former owner of Royal Child Care, where her children were loved, taught, nurtured and guided by the motto. "We play to learn, and we ' leant to play and live together." Rivers ministered under the leadership of Rev. Melvin Wilkins Sr. for many years. Upon retirement, she decided to be faithful in keeping her journal, combining sermons she had preached, along with interesting experiences she had witnessed over the years.
