Theatrical reading benefits Bethesda Center SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Bethesda Center for the Homeless held a unique fundraiser on Saturday, May 17 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church - a space used last winter as an overflow shelter for the homeless. An enthusiastic audience enjoyed a staged reading of "It All Started with a Dog," a play based on the novel by Leigh Somerville. The cast included Bethesda Center Board Chair Kathryn Milam and Board Member Florence Corpening. The Board hosted a reception following the read ing, and a love offering was collected to purchase a new commercial-grade washing machine for Bethesda's men's dorm. Additional donations are needed. Bria Lindsay, presi dent of the church's Teens of Purpose college preparatory ministry, introduced Olivia Stinson, a senior business administration major at Winston-Salem State University who delivered the morning message. Stinson, a Charlotte native and nationally-rec ognized philanthropist, offered the graduates tips for success and reminded them that they should expect some hurdles in life, but that the chal lenges can have benefits. "Hardships often pre pare people for" an extraordinary destiny," she said, adding that what they want may not be what God intends for them.
