She is also affil iated with the North Carolina Head Start Association, in addition to being active in the Charlotte Alumni Chapter. Pianist Thomas Turner To Present Recital Here Sunday ..Pianist and composer Thomas Turner, assistant pro fessor of music at the Univer sity of North Carolina at Char lotte. believes in preparing his audience for the music he plays. He especially does so yhen he includes in a program his own compositions.. . .Turner will present a piano recital on November 17 at 4 p.m. in Rowe Recital Hall on the UNCC campus. Included in the program will be one of his own compositions entitled "Arrows”. Appropriately titled, the written form of the music uses arrows as the nota tions of how the music is to be played. The music is a modern piece and Turner explains that he likes to play "very modern music and 1 find it best to place it in the middle of the progam. It’s better not to end with something in unfamiliar Births Mr. and Mrs. Ora Williams 5225 Klderbank Dr.A Bo> Mr. and Mrs. Robert Young 1210 Yuma St.A Boj Mr. and Mrs. David Phifer 3445 Barringer Dr.A Bo> Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Thompson 140® Frho Glen Rd.A Girl I . style and to not begin with it because the audience may not be prepared." ..Other than his own piece, the program will include Sonata in G Major, one of Franz Schubert’s major and last works which was com posed two years before his death in 1826. Selections from Annees de Pelerinage, trans lated Years of Pilgrimage by Franz Liszt include Le Mai du Pays (Homesickness), Au lac de Wallenstadt (At Lake YYallenstadt), Sposalizio (Wedding) and II Penseroso, a piece inspired by Michelang elo's statue to Giuliano de Medici. Petrarch's Sonetto 123, Turner explains, is a piano arrangement of a song Franz Liszt composed. The final piece of the program is Canzonetta del Salvator Rosa, a straight-forward arrange ment of a well-known song by the painter Salvator Rosa. .When selecting a program for his own recitals; Turner likes to use picture pieces which are inspired by specific ideas or images, he explains. “This is one of my three con trasting parts programs in which all pieces are extremely different from each other." As for his own composiHon to be presented in the recital. Turn er says, "it was not originally - intended to suggest the move ments of arrows shot from bows, but there are several moments in the piece where that suggestion is not in appropriate.” ..The assistant professor joined the L'NCC faculty in the fall of 1970 and has taught at Delta State College, Southern University and the University of Idaho where he was dir ector of the Contemporary Music Ensemble. He has pre sented recitals in this country and in Europe. . .HP has one published work, “Six Variations for Piano". Turner enjoys composing musfc but is not as interested in having his work published as he is in us{jig composing as part of his teaching. For example, he composed a string trio for some of his students to perform last year. And the piece, “Arrows”, was written on the request of a friend of his. pianist Pyrnell Figler. Figler has only one leg and Turner wrote-the piece in such a way the Figler could incorporate the use 6( two of the pedals on the piano simul taneously. As Turner ex plains, “most of what I write Is because I'm interested in doing it.” The recital is free and open to the public.
