THE SENSATIONAL “BOOTSY” Has legion of “Rubber” fans Bootsy Collins: A New Star Emerging On Rock, Funk Horizon By Deborah Gates Post Staff Writer In 1976, there were a lot of new stars emerging on the rock and funk horizons for a new generation of listeners. Though many took the spot light at center stage, only one seemed to radiate a charisma tic vibe that combined the best of Captain Kangaroo with the funk of today, Bootsy Collins, is one of the hottest new age stars to emerge, and while a lot of groups make it to the stage, Bootsy’s Rubber Band comes to play, see, stretch out, and conquer. Bootsy has introduced his new album on Warner Bro Name Is Bootsy, Baby," which is dedicated to the indoctrination of geepies into the houndogalistic curriculum of psychoticbumpschool, Le vel II. In other words, Bootsy has captured the geepies' genera tion. Now your question is, "What are geepies?” Accord ing to Bootsy, "I look at geepies as younger kids who are turned on with out drugs They’re so deep, they’re past D all the way toG. That's what makes them geep.” It seems that Bootsy must be on to something. His first release, ‘‘Slretchin’ Out In Bootsy’s Rubber Band” just turned gold and contained two hit singles, the psychotic pro gressive funk tune "Slretchin’ Out" and the love ballad "I'd Rather Be With You." His second album, which features Bootsy’s brand of "hound dog rock” stretches out even fur funk with nursery rhymes, Bootsy came up with the "Pinocchio Theory,” which is now listed on the top ten charts of Super Sounds. On "Rubber Duckie" Bootsy be comes Robin Lee Hood, and "steals from the rich and gives to poor little ol' me - Kunk that is," Bootsy says. On side two, titled Geepie landmusic, Bootsy dedicates his funk to teenage love, Se venties-style. “Munchies For Your Love," “What's A Tele phone Bill?" and "Can't Stay Away” explores the romantic side of Bootsy’s personality. A lot of songs have used young love themes, but only Bootsy could sing about romance from a back seat at McDo nald's or from a gas station telephone booth Bootsy's musical style is not an accident, but rather an outgrowth of his eight years as a professional performer. On the road at 16 as bassist for the James Brown Band, Bootsy then graduated to tlje Parlia ment Funkadelic where he got his degree in P-Funk. Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley joined up with the young bassist after leaving Brown. ) WBTVTo Air “Circus Of The Stars” Edward Asner.
