tl ENTERTAINMENT T THE CHABLOTTE PST • Thursday, Oct. 20, 1977-THE CHARLOTTE POST-Page Bl Tavares Will Rock Soul Train Tavares and David Oliver are featured guests this week end on Soul Train, television’s “hippest trip.” From their latest album, LOVE STORM, Tavares set the pace with “Whodunit,”, already a hit as a single, and “Goodnight My Love," cou pled with top seller “Don’t Take Away the Music” from last season. The five brothers, known professionally by their last name, are well known for such earlier successes as “She’s Gone,” “It Only Takes A Minute” and “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel.” Ralph Vierra, Arthur “Poo ch," Antone "Chubby," Felici ano “Butch” and Perry Lee “Tiny” first built up a follow ing in New England perform ing with their multi-talented father. Oavid Oliver, of Jamaican heritage, sings “Ms." and "What Kinda Woman" from his Jamerican Man album, a mixture of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, jazz and West Indian tempos. Although a new talent on records, Oliver traveled ex tensively with Mighty Joe Hicks and his group for seve ral years before going single. Rose Royce s Full Bloom Lp Certified As Gold The latest album from Rose Royce, ROSE ROYCE IN FULL BLOOM on Whitfield Records has been certified as a gold album by the RIAA in recognition of sales in excess of 500,000 units. The group, currently scoring with their hit single "Do Your Dance," is no stranger to the gilt disco award having previously won two gold singles - for "Car Wash" and "I Wanna Get Next To You” - and a gold album for "Car Wash Original Soundtrack.” Both the "Car Wash" single and album went on to platinum status. Due to legal questions, cur rent and future runs of ROSE ROYCE IN FULL BLOOM feature slightly different cov er work than did first editions of the LP. Hit content of the album, it should be emphasi zed, remains the same as when originally released this summer. THE HUES CORPORATION ~Fluid soul sound Hues Corporation Monopolizes Top 40, R&B Record Charts By Jacquie Levister Post Staff Writer The Hues Corporation mon oplized the Top 40 and R&B record charts with their num ber one hit, “Rock the Boat.” From coast to coast, in the summer of 74, the public reacted to this fluid soul sound with sales figures over two million. Prior to “Rock the Boat” the group had established the ir sound with another chart single, “Freedom for the Stal lion,” and “Rock the Boat” was followed with “Rocking Soul,” and “Love Corpora tion.” Both served to further enhance the growing reputa tion of the group. Its no fluke that The Hues ^orporauon is a success, len years have been spent putting together a polished, fast paced live act that has earned enthu siastic night club and concert acclaim. Among the prestigious gigs the Hues Corp. has played are the Queens charity at the Albert Hall, Radio City Music Hall with the Jackson Five, The Apollo, a string of con certs with the Spinners and college dates with Rufus and the Ohio Players. An international reputation has taken them to England, Germany, Holland, Japan, Mexico, Australia and Vene zuela and they recently re turned from a second tour of Japan and the Far East where they had sell-out concerts in such exotic places as Bang kok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The Board of Directors of the Hues Corp. consist of H. Ann Kelley, St. Clair Lee and Karl Russell. Ann, who was born in Bir mingham, Alabama and rear ed in Los Angeles, developed her well-trained voice through years of singing in her church choir. Even though her forte is soulful ballads she has been known to explode with frantic energy during a set. Discipline and patience, Ann feels, are her own main assets as a performer trying to succeed in the business. One of the major factors in making the act a success is the solid, soulful presence of St. Clair Lee. Born in San Franci sco, St. Clair spent most of his life in either Detroit or L06 Angeles. A person that would rather dance than do (almost) anything else, he is a spring board of energy and drive both on and off the stage. Rounding out this terrific trio known as The Hues Corp. is the Columbus, Ohio native, Karl Russell Karl brings to the group a vocal imagination that permits him to blend perfectly with the groups standout harmonies. One of the most soulful singers work ing today, his singing packs a wallop that was once describ ed by a young lady watching in the audience as “Sweet Dyna mite.” The Hues Corporation is often credited with initiating the disco era with disco sounds all traced to “Rock the Boat," and their reputation for solid dance music grew further with pounding, swirling selec tions like “Telegram of Love" and “I caught Your Act." Both songs featured the Hues trade mark, those breakneck sprint paced vocals. Those who fancy that kind of energetic, exhilarating dance music will continue to turn to the Hues Corporation, one corporation, at least, that'll never bast your trust.
