ρ—β——ai^iBy Hoyle Η. Martin Sr. Post Executive Editor ' FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Clifton Johnson, 36, was named by Gov. Jim Hunt to fill the newly created Mecklen burg Superior Court judge ship. The appointment makes Johnson the first black resi dent Superior Court Judge in the state of North Carolina. A graduate of the N.C. Cen tral University Law School, Johiison has served as Meck lenburg County Chief District Court Judge since 1974. This appointment too was the first for a black in Mecklenburg County and only the second in the state. + + + The Polaroid Corp. has an nounced it is terminating its business relationship with the Prank and Hirsch Company, its independent distributor in South Africa. Polariod report edly charged that the distribu tor firm had violated a 1971 agreement that prohibited selling Polaroid products to the South African govern ment. Polaroid's prohibition policy was established in opposition to the South African govern ment's racial separation poli cy. Specifically, the Polaroid Corp. objected to the use of its films in South Africa's re quirement that non-whites carry identity passbooks with photographs. + + + The American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, a major appraisal group, settled a federal lawsuit earlier this month by agreeing to not use a neighborhood's racial, ethnic or religious makeup as the basic for determining the val ue of homes. The settlement enabled the Institute to join the Depart ment of Justice and the Dept. of Housing and Urban Deve lopment in an agreement as to the "appropriate appraisal procedures for residential real estate." + + + The N.C. Humanities Com mittee has awarded the Afro American Cultural and ser vice Center, located at Spirit Square, a $5,391 grant to con duct five seminars on issues of public concern in Metrolina's black communities. Emphasis in the seminars will be on housing, employ ment, education, black culture and religion. Academicians and scholars in the fields of literature, philosophy, histo ry, religion and education a long with public officials, lay men -and service agency spo kesman will discuss issues and policy needs in the five areas the seminars will focus on. + + + Reginald Frazier, a 42-year old black attorney from New Hoyle H. Martin Sr. Bern, N.C., reportedly has said be plans to formally announce his intention to seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator. Five candi dates are currently campaign ing for the nomination in next May's primary race. Among these candidates is Charlotte an and former board chair man of NCNB, Luther Hodges Jr. the primary race winner will challenge for the seat now held by Republican Jesse He lms. + + + While Charlotte area job opportunities are reportedly better now than they've been since the early 1970s, North Carolina has slid back to last place among the 50 states in average hourly factory earn ings of $4.18 as of September. Rates in Mississippi, which had been in last place, rose from $4.16 to $4.21 per hour,. according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ave rage for the Southeast is $4.61 and.for the nation $5.73. Wednesday Night To Star Cosby, Poitier Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and Harry Belafonte join for ces in a comic caper, "Uptown Saturday Night," to be broad cast in its world television premiere on "The CBS Wed nesday Night Movies," Wed nesday, December 7, at 9 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Paula Kelly, Rosalind Cash, Roscoe Lee Brown, Johnny Sekka and Calvin Lockhart also star. Poitier portrays Steve Jack son, a hardworking factory hand, and-Cosby is his friend, streetwise cabbie Wardell Franklin. Both are feeling pretty good when they visit their favorite Saturday night hangout, Madame Zenobia's. Jackson is holding a (50,000 lottery ticket and Franklin has been having a lucky streak at crape. Then, gangster Silky ' Slim (Lockhart) steps in and ripe off the bar's patrons. Michael Walden U. S. Tour Sets Premiere By Dianne Simpson Post Staff Writer Narada Michael Walden, the former touring and record ing member of the Mahavis hnu Orchestra's final lineup ( 1974-75), and producer of Don Cherry's recent Atlantic Al bum, "Hear Now," is on a tour of the Eastern US. The itine rary is a follow up of the release of "I Cry, I Smile," Narada's second album for the label which he composed, arranged and produced at Atlantic Studios in New York. Narada, who has composed and-or played on albums with Weather Report, Jeff Beck, Alphonso Johnson, Tommy Bolin, Roy Buchanan and ot hers over the last two years, is encountering a tour that lasts from November 18 to Decem ber 1. His tour includes such sites as Cleveland and Buffalo enroute to St. Louis and Mil waukee, just to name a few. For this premier tour, this Atlantic recording artists is being presented with a band comprising of: Narada Mic hael Walden (drum, key boards, vocals); Pat Thral (lead guitar); Alex Ligert wood ( rhythm guitar, vocals ) ; Thomas Michael 'TM' Stevens (bass); Philippe Saisse (key boards, vocals); Norma Jean Bell (sax, vocals) ; and Robbie Gonzales (percussion).
