Famed Kooi Jazz F esti val-Hampton “Met The Test” IU.MJL ruiN...once again the Kool Jazz Festival-Hampton looked to meet the test of the ability of a small out-of-town main stream-of-jazz community to keep alive and well America's only native music form. The test this year came in the form of two new events and k line-up that included only jazz artists, except for only one night of Rhythm and Blues performers. Many said it couldn’t be done, but Bill Cope and John Scott, two of the festival’s directors who have been with the event from its beginning in 1968, held strong feelings about changing that opinion. “When Mfui and I started working on this event,” said Cope, “we loved the music and wanted to see it go on forever, but then times changed and we had to accept the change. It is a new time and a new day now, and we are seeking to return things to where we started.” The 1982 Kool Jazz Festival Hampton returned to its roots. Among the artists that appeared were some of the early stars who started the festival. Herbie Mann, Herbie Hancock, Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie - all were a part of those early days of the Hampton, Virginia event. The festival also included a number of great jazz artists who had not appeared in Hampton as well. Carmen McRae, the Heath Brothers, Jean Luc Ponty, Betty Carter, Woody Shaw and 0§car Peterson were some of those im— portant artistic names. Jazz enthusiasts wore smiles as broad as the Mississippi River when they learned that the 1982 festival would feature more jazz artists and a nostalgic return to Hampton Institute where the fes tival began. The first show which only at tracted about 250 people was held in Ogden Hall on Hampton Insti tute's campus. She was very well received and she let the audience know how much she appreciated their warmth. The era of the big band sounds were very much alive and well when the legendary virtuoso Count Basie brought his orchestra to the 14th annual Kool Jazz Festival Friday night. Basie shared the bill with Oscar Peterson, Hubert Laws and Angela Bofill. The 78-year-old Count thrilled the audience with his special, out Falcon Crest After 12 years of desertion.
