Page 16A - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Thursday, April 12, 1984 Dr. Mable McLean UNCF vice chairman Dr. McLean Receives UNCF i^^fiointment At the annual March meeting of the United Ne gro College Fund (UNCF), Dr. Mable McClean, pre sident of Barber-Scotia College, was elected vice chairman of the member presidents of UNCF. This is a two-year appointment, after which the vice chair man automatically be comes chairman. In her new position. Dr. McLean will assist the chairman and have respon sibility for answering the calls of UNCF to the worldwide public. “I do firmly believe in UNCF,” says Dr. McLean. “Because I am on-sight in carrying out its mission, I can certainly interpret what UNCF means and what it does for this so ciety.” The United Negro Col lege Fund represents a consortium of 42 predo minantly black colleges and universities. All are private and fully accredit ed. These UNCF institu tions provide educational opportunities for over 50,000 yoimg men and wo men annually. “The United Negro Col lege Fund firmly believes that better and stronger educational institutions will help us become a bet ter and stronger nation. It is towards this end that the UNCF’s efforts are de dicated,” concluded Dr. McLean. Scholarah^ rae Torrence Lytle High School Alumni Association will present a scholarship this year to an offspring of a graduate of Torrence Lytle High School (1937- 1968). The recipient of the scholarship will have to be planning to attend an accredited school of higher learning. Graduates are request ed to submit a letter stat ing need and goals, a resume and references from his-her minister and two other members of the community. Here are other rules for the $500 scholarship: The applicant must be the child or grandchild of Torrence Lytle. The applicant must be in good academic stand ing, and must be pursuing a bachelor degree. The applicant must sub mit a letter stating need a goal along with a re sume. References must be submitted from a min ister and two other mem bers of the com munity. The applicant will meet with the Alumni Screening committee for an interview. CALL WOTkshop The Charlotte Area Li teracy League is sponsor ing another workshop to help tutors who want to assist illiterate adults in reading and writing skills. The workshop to train volunteer tutors will be Friday, April 27, from 7- 10 p.m. and the following Saturday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. All workshops will be taught at the CALL of fice, 1520 South Blvd. According to Nancy Campbell, the director of CALL, more than 89,000 adults in Mecklenburg County cannot read and write well enough to fill out a job application. She stated thousands more are in school and need help. CALL is a volunteer, nonprofit organization. For more information, tele phone the office at 375- 3433. Dr. Norman Will Participate In Livingstone Seminar On Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m.. Dr. Marcona Hines, Dr. Gloria Berry- Holly and Dr. Bryant Norman, former biology majors at Livingstone Col lege, will participate in a seminar in room 201 of the S.E. Duncan Science Building. The activites are a part of an overall program to expose students to promin ent alumni who have made significant contributions to the field of medicine and science. Dr. Hines is a 1971 graduate of Livingstone and received the M.D. from the University of North Carolina Medical School at Chapel Hill. He practices in Durham with another Livingstone grad uate, Dr. Kenneth Banks. Dr. Berry-Holly is a 1976 graduate of Living stone and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Dental School and subse quently served on its facul ty. She is practicing den tistry in Hillsboro, N.C. Dr. Norman is a Salis bury native and a 1964 graduate of Livingstone. He earned his degree in dentistry from the Univer sity of Buffalo and cur rently has a very success ful practice in Salisbury. The public is invited to hear these three outstand ing professionals discuss opportunities and recent discoveries in medicine. UNCC Sponsors Trip To World’s Exposition The Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is sponsoring a trip to the Louisiana World’s Exposi tion in New Orleans June 20-24. The tour will include roundtrip motorcoach transportation, lodging, room tax and baggage handling, a tour of the city. a cruise on the Mississip pi River, trip interruption insurance and a two-day admission ticket to the World’s Fair. Lodging in New Or leans will be at the new Sheraton New Orleans lo cated within four blocks of the World’s Fair site, the French Quarter and the Mississippi River.
