♦ Page 2B - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Thursday, January 7, 1988 Diva To Star At Delta Gala New York Opera Star Clanuna Dale Washington, DC— The New York City Opera's new star, Clamma Dale, will appear as a Diamond Jubilee gala for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at the Kennedy Center here Sun day, January 31, 1987 at 2 p.m. Famed singing star Lena Home will conduct the program, one of several stellar events to be held the weekend of January 29-31, by. the public service so rority of more than 120,000 col lege-educated black women. The organization, the nation's larg est of individual black women members, celebrates its 75th anniversary in 1988. The Jubi lee weekend marks the official opening of a year-long celebra tion. Ms. Dale has scored numerous triumphs with opera companies and orchestras around the world, including the Paris Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Strasbourg Opera, Bogo ta Opera and orchestras in Lon don, New York, Boston, Wash ington, D.C., Atlanta, Minnesota, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Buffalo, Dallas, New Jersey and Puerto Rico. 'We are Indeed pleased to have such an outstanding star as Ms. Dale help us to kick off Delta's year-long Diamond Jubilee. She is tremendously accomplished as a concert artist and we salute her," said Mrs. Hortense G. Ca nady, of Lansing, Michigan, Del ta's national president. Ms. Dale is a native of Chester, Pennsylvania and holds bache lor's and master's degrees from the Jullllard School of Music. The soprano's 1975 New York City Opera debut in The Tales of Hoffman sparked her rapid as cent to staixlom. She took the critics by storm with her stunning performance as Antonia and five nights later captivated her audience again with an equally outstanding per formance las Glulletta in the same opera. The producer of the Houston Grand Opera's highly acclaimed Porgv and Bess saw these per formances and immediately en gaged her as the female lead on Broadway and in the cities of Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Montreal and To ronto. Ms. Dale is also featured on the RCA recording of Porgv and Bess. Her portrayal of Bess won the attention of audiences and ope ra houses throughout the world during the ensuing decade. Highlights of this period include her debut with the Opera Com pany of Philadelphia when, on eight hours' notice, she replaced Teresa Stratas as Nedda in I Pagllaccl. She also sang at the Paris Opera for three consecu tive seasons in The Love of Three Oranges. Alda and Turan- dot. Ms. Dale was soloist in the world premiere of the Maeter- llnch Song Cycle by Alexander von Zemlinsky appearing in Carnegie Hall, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. She was also featured at Carnegie Hall in Virgil Thom son's Four Saints in Three Acts, a gala performance honoring the composer on his 85th birth day. The performance was re corded on the Nonesuch label. During recent seasons, Ms. Dale has been a frequent guest at the White House and has ap peared in several television spe cials. America's Leading Classicial Guitarist To Perform With Charlotte Symphony CHARLOTTE, N.C.—America's leading classical guitarist, Christopher Parkenlng Joins the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aran- juez" on Wednesday, January 13, at 8:15 p.m. in Ovens Auditori um. The program also includes Mozart's "Symphony No. 36", ("Linz") and Brahms' "Symphony No. 1". The corporate sponsor for the evening is Carolina Trac tor and Equipment Company. The featured composition, "Concerto de Aranjuez," was written in 1939 by Joaquin Ro drigo, one of the greatest living Spanish composers. "Concerto de Aranjuez" is one of the most loved pieces written for guitar. From its first performance in 1939, the composition achieved instant fame in Spain and throughout Europe. Christopher Parkenlng has been an active student of guitar since the age of eleven. In sub sequent years he took up aca demic and musical studies at the University of Southern Cali fornia. He studied interpreta tion with the legendary cellist Gregor Platlgorsfy and worked with Andres Segovia in master classes in California and Spain. Christopher Parkenlng first commanded national attention when still in his teens, now he ranks as the leading virtuoso of classical guitar and most re corded guitarist. Andres Sego via, the master guitarist of the century has declared of his for mer student, "Christopher Par kenlng is a great artist - one of the mnst brilliant guitarists in the world." Each season Mr. Parkenlng performs in major music centers of North America and regularly appears on the most prestigious concert series. He is also a fa vorite guest soloist with major s3Tnphony orchestras, including those of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland and many more. In addition, the guitarist has appeared throughout Eu rope and Japan. Christopher Parkenlng's inter national fame continues to be augmented by his best selling albums for Angel Records. Since 1968 he has recorded nine albums, the most recent being A Bach Celebration for Guitar and Orchestra. Mr. Parkenlng re corded the album with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, commemorating Bach's trlcen- tennlal. Since 1984, it has been a consistent top-20 recording on the Billboard chart. For tickets call the Sjmi- phony Box Office at (704) 332- 6136, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jazz Picked As National Treasure (Washington, D.C.,-NNPA)-In one of its final acts before ad journing for the Christmas-New Year holiday season, the United States Senate approved House of Representatives Resolution 57, designating Jazz as a na tional American Treasure to be preserved and promoted. The Resolution was Introduced this year by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mlch.), who also Introduced legislation to make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a na tional holiday immediately after the civil rights leader was as sassinated nearly 20 years ago. The holiday is observed January 18 this year. The Jazz Act was passed in the House of Representatives last September and later Introduced in the Senate by Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) where it passed last month. 'The contrast in the long struggle to honor King is noted in a television doc umentary, 'The Making Of The MLK Holiday", scheduled for presentation in nearly a hun dred markets this month. In response to the latest Sen ate action. Congressman Co nyers Issued a statement sa3dng "I am extremely pleased that both Houses of Congress have now recognized jazz as a nation al American treasure...Since Its birth Jazz has evolved into a so phisticated and multifaceted musical art form. ""...Though indigenous to Amer ica and a product of the African American experience, until now Jazz has not been accorded an appropriate level of support by either the public or private sec tor." Conyers concluded that "Organizations like the National Association of Jazz Educators, the American Federation of Jazz Societies and the National Jazz Service Clubs are available to help the public get to know Jazz music better. It is something for all of us to take pride in..." The official resolution states "Whereas Jazz has achieved pre eminence throughout the world as an indigenous American mu sic and art form, bringing to this country and the world a unique ly American musical synthesis and culture through the African American exp>erlence and.. 'Whereas this great American musical art form has not yet been properly recognized not accorded the institutional stat us commensurate with its value and Importance...and whereas it is Important for the youth of America to recognize and under stand Jazz as a significant part of their cultural and Intellectual heritage: and "Whereas it Is in the best Interest of the national welfare and all of our citizens to preserve and celebrate this unique art form: Now, Therefore, be it re solved by the House of Repre sentatives (the Senate Concur ring) that it is the sense of the Congress that Jazz is hereby designated as a rare and valua ble American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support and resources to make certain it is preserved, under stood and promulgated. Martha Arnold recently sang the role of Kathy in The Student Prince with the New England L3nrlc Operetta Company at the Palace Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut. Ms. Arnold has sung on the Noonday Concerts Recital series at historic Trinity Church in Manhattan, and is also a regular performer with their Concerts To Go series. Her recent Second Prize in the 1987 YMCA Annual Singers Competi tion Includes a 1988 New York recital. Equally at home in the world of musical theatre, Ms. Ar nold has toured in Hello Dollv with Carol Channing and has performed on cruise ships from Alaska to the Mediterranean. Harold McIntosh made his op eratic debut In 1978 in an im pressive performance of Papa- geno in Columbia Lyric Opera's production of Die Zauberflote. He has been a district winner of the Atlanta Regional Metropoli tan Opera Auditions and was a national semi-finalist in New York City at the Met.
