Nearly $200,000 Annually

Work has begun, at Johnson C.
Smith Uoiverslty, on a project
that will save the school nearly
$200,000 in energy costs each
year. Commercial Energy Sys
tems Inc. and Way Engineering
Company Inc. (CES/Way), in a
joint venture, will Invest more
than $800,000 In energy conser-
iVatlon measures on the Char
lotte, North Carolina campus.
In a project arranged through a
.U.S. Department of Energy grant
'to the United Negro College
Fund. Houston based CES/Way
has entered into a performance
contract with Johnson C. Smith
to provide equipment retrofits,
energy control systems and
management services to be paid
for from energy cost savings.
Johnson C. Smith University,
with 22 major campus buildings
serving 1,200 students, has an
annual energy budget of more
than $560,000. Engineering
studies indicate that a reduction
in energy cost by more than one
third can be accomplished. The
agreement with CES/Way in
cludes the Installation of new,
individual boilers tb replace an
obsolete steam plant, along with
the addition of small hot water
heaters, lighting retrofits and
the installation of a computer
ized energy management sys
tem. These measures should cut
costs at the school by more than
$190,000.
The performance contract also
calls for preventive mainte
nance services and regular
maintenance on all new equip
ment that will be Installed. In
addition, training of operations
and maintenance personnel in
energy efficient operations will
be Included as a part of the pro
ject. CES/Way will monitor the
operation of the energy systems
at the school and will continue
to provide maintenance services
during the life of the contract.
"This project became available
at just the right time for us", said
George Hedgespeth, vice presi
dent for Finance at Johnson C.
Smith. "Our old system was on
it's last legs and we were trying
to figure out what to do. Now we
can replace it with a much more
