And the sedan got my vote for ugliest attempt at design since it was introduced five years ago. Now part of that has changed. The Saturn sedan and wagon enter ‘96 with some new duds a new attitude and hopes of dethroning the reign ing king of small car sales Ford’s dull but popular Escort. Let’s start with the looks. The old sedan was just butt ugly. It was a combination of a few wretched designs from all over the GM galaxy. Much of it came from Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (which certainly was n’t in its final years). That body has been dumped on the trash heap in place of a much more rounded body. It’s also bland as heck. Oh, it’s light-years nicer looking than the old, but at least the old body had character. This simply blends in with the crowd. The company calls it “a world-class blend of Japanese and European flavor.” Yeah, right. And I wish Saturn could have resisted grafting what looks like the Oldsmobile Acheiva’s front end to the car. The front and rear fenders, doors, tnink and one-piece fas- cias are still made of dent- resistant plastic, which makes them easier to fix if crashed. The hood, roof and upper deck are steel. My test car was the up-level SL2, so it had body-colored bumpers, optional 15-inch alloy wheels and rear deck lid spoiler. The interior was all-new last year, so it carries over. It’s more fitting on the new body- style but it has some problems. The instrumentation is nicely done. Everything is in clear view and easy to read. But the center console pod which hous es the radio is annoying because 1 could twist it with my hand. It felt as if I could screw the whole thing off with one good yank. Also, the radio controls were small and there See TEST DRIVE Page 78 CALENDAR OF EVENTS Coca-Cola Being Black in America: A Real Picture Remembo* yourfost real history lesson? They also knew how important it was that this knowledge continue to be handed down.
