DAHfEL HALL riirrr ^ A -ui «S»»Ar»‘ I New, modern Daniel Hall for the Fine Arts The sounds of music The tiepartment of music at Chowan College has a history of out- standing performance and growth. The growth has been especially true since the construction of the new Daniel Hall for the Fine Arts which houses the department of music. Approximately 280 students are involved in various phases of the music department studies. There are 70 or more private instructions per week and the department has a total of 27 music majors,, mostly voice and piano. According to Professor Chamblee, the department will enter a music education program in such things as vocal or instrumental education, with some emphasis on church music, in the near future. Several students in the department are already involved in church choirs throughout the area. The department of music is especially interested in community services. Agood example is the string program which is offering instruction, at present, mostly to non-college students and is directed by Mr. Paul Q. Topper, head of string instruction at East Carolina University. Classes are held in this area once each week. This instruc tion is offered in order to build up string players in the area. The department is now searching for a Grant to allow instruction through out the county, possibly through the public schools, whereby the in struction could continue indefinitely. According to a report from the department, the string program will last as long as there are students wanting to take it, and might even go through the summer. The Community Chorus is another area of community services. Professor Trelles G. Case (standing) instructs two music students in piano. An accomplished pianist himself, Professor Case came to Chowan College in 1964. The two students are Mrs. Blanche Rountree and Mrs, Peggy Davenport of Corapeake; both are commuting students.
