Director of touring choir Professor James Chamblee. Chairman of the Department of Music, is the Director for the Chowan College Trouring Choir, the College Choir and the College Community Oratorio group. Professor Chamb lee has been at Chowan College since 1959 and has completed his course work for the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. . . . from Daniel Hall This group is made up of individuals from the Chowan College Choir, fac uity at Chowan, and any interested persons throughout the area who wish to participate in the choral program The college Community Oratorio So ciety presents two programs each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Another is the college orches tra which is open to all from the area who are interested in performing. During the spring of 19HS) there will be a piano workshop in the department of music which will host piano teach ers from North Carolina and Virginia This workshop will be conducted by Dr. Daniel Ericourt, Artist in Resi dence at the University of North Car olina at Greensboro. Dr Ericourt will be here on April 17, 1969. The work shop will be conducted during the day and a concert will be given that night Members of the department anticipate continuation of this kind of event each year. Mr. Ericourt is known for a weekly TV program that he renders on educational TV in North Carolina Professor Bob Brown instructs in area of music theory and wind instru ments in the department of music. Professor Brown's band at Chowan, although not a large marching band, actively participates in the music pro gram and renders performances at varying times. Mr. Brown teaches private lessons on the various wind and percussion instruments and holds special classes each Saturday morning for aspiring musicians from the local schools. Visiting teacher A visiting teacher in the department of music is Mr. Paul Q Topper, head of string instruction at East Carolina University, He leads a string program at Chowan with classes meeting once each week There are two groups in this program which is aimed primarily at children, but adult and private instruction are also offered. In the children's classes Mr. Topper incorporates new methods for teaching children. Here he is using the Suzuki method (Japanese method i The children range in age from four to nine or ten i second or third grades in school). Daniel Hall fully equipped Daniel Hall is equipped with practice rooms, classrooms, and large studios. The music program is equipped for piano, voice, band and other related subjects. Professor Chamblee is shown here adjusting the sterophonic tape and record deck in one of the large studios in the building. These listening devices are utilized in classroom instructon.
