U. of Illinois professor gives two performances at Chowan The chairman of the choral department of the School of Music, University of Illinois, made two appearances in Dan iel Hall at Chowan College Oct. 17. At 9 a. m., Professor Harold A. Decker worked with Cho wan’s choir. He presented a lecture at 2 p.m. on the subject, James B. Powers, executive vice-president of the Plan ters National Bank & Trust Company of Rocky Mount, spoke during orientation on the topic “Chowan College - An Invitation to Personal Enrichment.” He is shown on campus with Rocky Mount students, Dennis Pittman, graduate of Northern Nash High School, and Bonnie Joyner, graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High. Powers is a new member of the College's Board of Advi sors. Ishee gives performance The Chowan College Depart ment of Music presented Jeffer son Ishee. baritone, in concert (October 271 at 8 p.m. in Mc Dowell Columns Auditorium. Ishee, professor of music at Chowan, teaches voice and is director of the College Choir. While at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he recently completed his Mas ters Degree, Ishee was the lead ing baritone for the Opera Thea tre. He starred in productions of Rossini's "Italian in Algiers." Nicolai's "Merry Wives of Wind sor.' and played supporting] roles in "La Boheme." "Donj Giovanni. " and 'Madame But-, terfly." Ishee was also active as solo ist for the Carolina Choir and turned down a contract offer to sing with the National Opera Company in order to join Cho wan's faculty. The recital included works by Handel. Schubert. Mozart, Puc cini, and others, featuring "Avant do quitter ces lieux" from Gounod's “Faust," and the famed "Toreador Song" from “Carmen" by Georges Bizet. Ishee was assisted at the piano by his wife, Betty. “Choral Music Today and Tom orrow.” Students attended as well as the general public. His visit was part of the visit ing scholars’ program sponsored by members of the Association of Eastern North Carolina Colleges. Dr. Decker has held his present position since 1957. He conducts the University Concert Choir, Oratorio Society and the University Chorale. In add ition, he supervises a doctoral program in choral music. Decker has made a number of European summer tours with U. of I. choral groups — in 1958, 1961 and 1965 with the Varsity Men’s Glee Club and in 1963 and 1967 with the Concert Choir. On the latest tour the choir was one of two American groups invited to participate in Europa Cantat III in Belgium, sponsored by the European Federation of ■Youth Choirs. Decker was elected president of the American Choral Direc tors Association in 1966 for a two-year term. He has been a director of the association since 1963. For 13 years before coming to Illinois, Professor Decker was head of the voice and choral departments at the University of Wichita, Kan. He was gradua ted from Morningside College, Sioux City, la., in 1934 and earn ed a master of music degree from Oberlin Conservatory He has a professional certi ficate from the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Fountainebleau, France, where in 1953 he studied choral music under the famed teacher, Nadia Boulanger. Morningside College in 1958 conferred an honorary doctor of music degree on Decker. During summers he has taught at the University of Michigan, George Peabody Col lege at Nashville, Tenn., and University of Southern Cali fornia. To an increasing number of students, staff and faculty, Thomas A. Daniel is “Tommy, the guy who is always drag ging his camera around with him. Daniel, who served two years in Viet nam, his last one as a combat photographer. Daniel, 21-year-old freshman, All it takes to bridge the “generation gap” (if one does exist) is a smile and handclapse as demonstrated above by Dr. R. Kelly White, member of Chowan’s Board of Advisors from Conway. Reciprocating wth the smiles are two members of Mrs. Henry K. Burg- wyn’s secretarial science class. Peggy J. Members of Mrs. Burgwyn’s class served as hostesses for both the Board of Advisors meeting Sept. 22 and Board of Trustees meeting Sept. 29. Mrs. Bur- gwyn is a professor in the Department of Business. is a 1966 graduate of Enloe High School in Raleigh, where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Daniel, reside at 1209 North View Street. His service in Vietnam was with the 46th Charlie Company, first as a radio operator, and later as a staff photographer. In this capacity, Daniel was responsible for fflming his unit in action against the enemy for the Army Public Information office. Daniel, who was discharged July 4, 1969, also serves as assis tant dorm adviser for Mixon Hall, men’s residence hall. Although at work only since September, Daniel has handled numerous assignments ranging from pictures of the football team to shots of student nurses. His pictures of Chowan family members are appearing with frequent regularity in “Smoke Signals," the campus news paper, the Ahoskie “Herald," and other newspapers in North Carolina and Virginia, as well as Baptist state and denomina tional papers.
