Gymnasium-physical education center nears campletian. Work on Schedule Gymnasium Two-fhirds Completed Construction of Chowan’s new gymnasiun-physical education center is about two-thirds completed, according to Ben Sutton, business manager. “We are very satisfied with the progress and quality of work,” stated Sutton. He praised the work of the general contractor, Kig Hunter of Greensboro, and subcontractors Watson Electrical, Southern Piping (mechanical work), and W. M. Wiggins (plumbing and heating), all of Wilson. Sutton said the front and sides have been bricked and workers are now bricking the back. He said the plumbing “is basically done for the pool area in the rear. The most difficult work—the roughing in—has been done for the entire building. This is the work that takes a long time with little visible progress.” Sutton said work has begun on placing the roof on the building. “Once the roof is on, the inside finishing work can be done, beginning with the front part of the main gym and the lobby,” Sutton noted. “we are anticipating the building will be completed and in use early in 1980,” the business manager added. The cost of the facility is $2,150,000. Durwood Sauls, job superintendent for King Hunter, said workmen will begin digging the pool around August 1. He said this will be followed by pouring concrete to form the pool. He explained it will take five or six weeks to complete most of the pool work. Job superintendent Durwood Souls, right, and Russell Trogdon, both of King Hunter Construction Co., study architect's plans for construction of the new gymnasium-physical education center. The facility is now about two-thirds completed. For July, 1979 PAGE THREE
