W.J. BOWMAN Graduate appointed by Phillips W. J. (Jerry) Bowman, a Chowan graduate, has joined Phillips Fibers Corporation as technical service representative for continuous filament yams. Bowman is responsible for all Marvess olefin filament yarns pro duced at Philhps’ Spartanburg, S. C., facility. These yams are sup plied to the carpet, upholstery and industrial filament markets. He came to Phillips Fibers from the Eastman Kodak Company in Kingsport, Tenn., where he was a technical representative. He is a native of Mt. Airy, and graduated from Chowan and North Carolina State University. Phillips Fibers is a subsidiary of Phillips 66 Company and is the most diversified olefin fiber manufacturer in the United States. Lady Braves take third in regionals The Chowan volleyball team, defending Region X Champions, battled their rivals Anderson, Spartanburg Methodist and North Greenville in the Region X Tourna ment in November, and came up a little short in their bid for a third consecutive Region X champion ship. The Lady Braves finished third behind champion Anderson and runner up Spartanburg Methodist. In the first round, Chowan defeated North Greenville by scores of 9-15, 15-12, and 15-3, and was led by hitters Vanessa Mar tinez and Rachael Rhodes. In the second round, the Lady Braves were knocked off by Ander son in three games. Taking three of four matches from Chowan this season, the Lady Trojans’ depth was the deciding e^e ageunst Coach Janet Collins’ scrappy eight. In the consolation finals, Chowan faced Spartanburg Methodist, who defeated the Lady Braves to cap ture second place honors in the tournament. Chowan College Scholarshare S. Gerald is one of 455 Chowan students who work up to 20 hours a week to help pay for their college education. Without this financial aid, many of these students would not be able to re main in college. Chowan is pleased to provide and help pay for the work of students who take this kind of in itiative.
