Corn Planting Advice Given County Agent A. S. Knowles Gives Brunswick County Farmers Soma Hints On How To Improve Corn Yield Corn planting time is rapidly j approaching and farmers who are! interested in the corn production' program are already busy with! their plans. Soil is one of the first | considerations points out County) Agent A. S. Knowles and in the j corn program a good, well drain ed soil should be selected and a good seed bed prepared. At planting time 400 to 600! pounds of 6-8-6 or 7-7-7 fertilizers j should be applied per acre. Rows should be laid off three and a| half feet apart and the seed I should be planted sixteen or i seventeen inches apart in the! drill. In response to an inquiry County Agent Knowles stated yes terday that there are a large number of hybrid varieties of corn available, but for this sec tion farmers are cautioned to buy only the N. C. 27 yellow hybrid or the Dixie 17 white hybrid. The N. C. 27 is prefered because it is more weevil resistant. Culti vate it very shallowly one or twoj times and side dress with 500 pounds of nitrate of soda or equaiivant when the corn is about two feet high, advises the County Agent. Six Brunswick Men Enter Army1 Six young Brunswick men en listed in the armed service dur ing the month of February, ac cording to a report from Com mander Charles J. Markus of the Wilmington Recruiting Station. The six split up; three preferr ing the air force and three the regular army. Among the six was one Navy j veteran, Paul Chestnut of Sup ply. He voluntered for the Air borne unassigned. The other two volunteering for the Air Service were John D. Frink of Shallotte and Max T. Edwards of Bolivia. The three preferring the re gular army were all from Shal Big Sales Event For Shallotte Shallotte Trading Company Planning Sale This Week Preparatory To Opening Of New Store In Near Fu . ture Preparing to move some items of their stock into their large new anex and then remodel the present building, the Shallotte Trading Company is announcing a big remodeling sale, beginning Friday of this week. For this sale Hobson Kirby, owner of the business, has se cured the service of Jim Hender son of the huge Butler Brothers store in Baltimore. Mr. Hender son, an experienced merchandis er, will give his personal attention to all phases of the sales event. The Shallotte Trading Company with its large main building and two large warehouses, one of lotte, Edwin W. Jarrell and his brother Daniel M. Jarrell, Jr., and Walter L. Smith. which has just been converted into a modern hardware store, is credited with being the biggest merchandising organization in the l county. The business has grown j steadily since it was purchased by j Mr. Kirby a number of years j ago. Early Lettuce Is In Prospect River Road Farm Will Have; This Crop Ready For Mar ket Before The End Of! This Month Brunswick county lettuce will j be ready for marketing before, the end of March and it will be | a good product, according to E. H. Sheppard of Southport and Shiloh, N. J. Mr. Sheppard has two acres in the crop this year. He is grow ing it purely as an experiment and a look at his field will con vince anyone that the experi ment is headed for success. It is very probable that with the soil and climate along the River Road! where the Sheppard farm is locat ed, lettuce and some other crops can be grown to maturity at least ten days earlier than anywhere else in North Carolina. And at that, about all sections of Brunswick can produce truck crops earlier than elsewhere in the state. The River Road farm lands are especially favored over the other very near the coast lands. In the first place there is less sand, as the soil is much heavier than that found along right near the coast. Added to this fact the Cape Fear river contributes toward a regular breeze that prevents frost from settling to any great degree on the River Road area. It is maintained that along with various other things, very early truck and plant crops can easily be grown throughout Brunswick county. The River Road farms bid fair to become an asset to all sections of the | county as they are in an area where experiments and demon strations will be made. It is in evitable that within a very few years many northern truckers will be attracted to Brunswick by the successful experiments on the River Road. Letter Recalls Outstanding Act Jerry Ball, Great Friend Of Southport And Brunswick County, Played Spectac ular Roll In March Of Dimes Campaign Writing a friend here last week Jerry Ball, special repre sentative of the Esso Standard Oil Company, with headquarters in Charlotte, asked about the fishing. He also took occasion to make some inquiries as to wheth er they are still feeding oysters on corn meal at Howell's Point. Once or twice each year Jerry shows up at Southport with a fishing trip in mind. Last sum mer Jerry and W. B. Keziah went to Howell's Point and there Jerry was initiated into the mysteries of feeding corn meal to the oysters, a matter in which he expressed disbelief until he was shown. Mr. Ball's letter recalls to mind a matter happening early in Feb ruary and which attracted much attention in the newspapers. The versatile Jerry sparked the Meck lenburg March of Dimes drive, and in the Charlotte papers and elsewhere he was given the credit of turning the tide that resulted in Charlotte and Mecklenburg county putting up over a hun dred thousand dollars for the polio fund. A versatile piano player with a wide knowledge of music, Jerry's polio fund raising stunt was to put $500.00 of his own money on the line to say that if Shallotte THEATRE SHALLOTTE, N. C. Those asking j for tunes to be played had to accompany their request with a dollar. When they asked for a tune that Jerry could not play one of his dollars went into the kitty, along with the dollar of the person asking for the tune.
