FOR CRIMINAL ASSAULT.
High Point Hoj I" TriniMe At Lexing
ton Held I tutor Hondo! !)(.
Report conies from Lesingtoij
that Call Maynard, a young whit
man of High Point, heretofore sus
taining a good character, was charged
with criminal assault on Molly
Everheart, aged 25 years, at Lexing
ton on Thursday night of last week,
The alleged assault took place on
the grounds where the St. Louis
Amusement Co. was holding a car
nival. Maynard had gone to Lexington
to attend the carnival, and while on
the grounds met the Everheardt
woman.
After being in her company for
a while, it is alleged that he enticed
her to a secluded portion of the
grounds and there assaulted ber.
Conflicting stories come from Lex
ington as to the character of the
woman. While it is admitted that
Bhe comes of a respectable . family,
it is said that her character is not
good.
Maynard was given a preliminary
hearing Friday and the evidence
was considered sufficient to justify
his detention for criminal assault
without bail. Later the committing
justice of the peace decided to permit
nim to give $1000 bond, which he so
far has failed to do. This indicates
that the justice does not believe the
State's evidence in its entirety.

During an durational Meeting Mr.
Connor I'.xpouses the Special School
Tax I Section and Mr. ;rubb Opposes.
Lexiiigten, June 0. A public shaking on
the question of special school tax at Pinpy
Academy, in Boone Township, last night
ended in a sensational fight between H Clay
Grubb, the distiller of Boone, and the princi
pal speaker of the occasion, Mr. I). W. Con
nor, Jr., of Raleigh.
In the middle of his speech, Mr. Connor
wai interrupted by Mr. Grubb calling him a
liar, prefacing this short ugly word with the
usual adjectives of condemnation. Mr.
Connor was game. Without any preliminar
ies, he left the' speaker's stand and made
for Grubb, shedding his coat as he went.
He met Grubb half way, landing a heavy
blow fuH in Grubb's face". Then the speaker
and his interrupter clinched. For two min
utes or more a fierce fight ensued Mr.
Grubb is leading the opposition to the tax
law.
In his speech. Mr. Connor told the joke
abjut the wooden nutmegs, stating the ad
vantage of long term schools, and comparing
Massachusetts and North Carolina. He said
that in New England the people Led 180
school days to ouiy 80 in this State. ' It is
no wonder then that those yankees can sell
our people wooden nutmegs." Then Mr
Connor stated that all the taxes collected un
der this special law would accrue to the sole
bene it of the children in luone township
Mi. Grubb denied this, nnd stated that it
wasa "G-d lie, just like that nutmeg
story." Grubb reiterated these remarks in a
loud voice with the results as above stated.
