This is Labor's great day and so far as local wage-earners are concerned, it has been thoroughly appropriated and appropriately celebrated. The weather was perfect for the cele bration, the wage-earners of the city, or at least a great many of them, had holiday, there were throngs of visitors within the city gates and everything else was as- propitious. Excursions from the mountains, the seashore and north and south of Charlotte swelled the crowds on the streets and the true holi day spirit pervaded the air. The program thus far has been faith fully observed and those that are tak ing part in the celebration are enjoy ing themselves to the fullest extent The hrst part ot the program was a street parade, in which the various labor unions of the city took part. Headed by Steele Creek band and fol lowed by a number of attractive floats representing local business houses, the procession traversed the principal streets of the city and wound - up at Latta Park. Here the crowd, which was. augmented by hundreds of visitors and sight-seers, heard an excellent ad dress by Hon. Jerome Jones of Atlanta. This afternoon contest and games of amusing and healthful nature for prizes, are taking place at the pans and tonight the festivities will be conclud ed by a free minstrel show at the au ditorium. Altogether it has been a most pleasant and eventful day, and one of which labor and its friends will carry many ' pleasant recollections in the years to come. PANTHER CREEK VALLEY i. Militia Patrols the Valley But Finds Fothingto Do Many New Men Are Reporting . Ready For Work (By Wire to The News.) Madrid, Sept. 1. The government is greatly perturbed by the growth of Re publicanism in the province of Catalo nia. The Governor of the province reports that clubs and newspapers are increas ing rapidly with the avowed purpose of freeing Catalonia from the Spanish yoke. Many of these establishments have destroyed the Spanish flag. The north and south graded schools and the colored school opened this morning under exceedingly favorable circumstances. Despite the fact that this is a Na tional and State holiday, over twro thousand children in Charlotte this morning laid aside their summer-vacation play things and took up their books and pencils. The sights at the north and south graded schools this morning were in deed inspiring. At these two schools over 1,500 children reported for work. At the north school there were 767 names enrolled and at the south school the number was 741. At the colored graded school the number of names enrolled were 741. Comparing these figures with last year, it is ascertained that the number of children enrolled today exceeds last year by about 25, In making this comparison, it will be well to remember that Labor Day last year was not ao generally observed as this year. This accounts for the ab sence of a few hundred children this morning. It is generally believed that by the end of the week at least 1,800 white children and 800 .colored children will have made application for study in the Charlotte schools. - t .At the. south graded school at the' beginning of last fall's term, there were 703 scholars enrolled. Today, notwithstanding the fact that a National and State holiday was on, 741 children were present. At the north graded school last year there were less than 700 children pres ent on the opening day. Today there were 767. This, as readers of The News will ob- Tamaqua, Pa., Sept. 1.
