Never since the schools have been organized have so many children applied for admission. At an earlv hour this morning, big and little tots lined the side-walks of the city with books in hand, wending their way to the city schools. On Ninth street, near the North graded school building there was an army of little ones. At the South school, the crowd was even larger than at the North, and it was a marry rollicking and nappy crowd, too. Prof. Alexander Graham, superin tendent of the city schools, was called over the telephone this after noon. He was exceedingly happy over the large attendance and the splendid beginning. For the next few days there will be very little regular work as the chil dren have to be arranged in classes and rooms. This will take consider able time and it is doubtful if real school work will be entered into oe- : fore the first of next week. ! The figures today are simply as tounding. Who would have thought that the two white graded schoels of the city would have started out with nearly 1,700 children? Many parents will not allow their children to start to school until the warm weather is at an end. Many pre fer to send their children to private schools. STORM OR PROMOTER SOUTHERN BELL CO PLANS HANDSOME HOME TO BE ERECTED ON ONE OF PRINCIPAL STREETS Charlotte the Most Important Point Between Washington and Atlanta and Company Realizes Neccessity of a Building in This Place Just as, soon as a suitable site can be purchased, the Southern Bell Tele phone Company will begin the erection of a splendid building in this city. Mr. M. B. Spier, the division superin tendent of the company has his head quarters here and the Bell company recognizes the fact that Charlotte is about the best point along its line be tween Washington and Atlanta. Just what kind of a building will be erected, has not been definitely decided. That it will be a credit to the company as well as the city, goes without say ing. In all large cities where real estate is constantly on the increase, large corporations like the Bell Company find it not only profitable but more convenient to own their own home. In the erection of such buildings the cor porations that have millions of money, build for the future and, this fact will insure a most pretentious building for Charlotte. While . a site has not been figured on, the company will, of course build on or near one of the principal streets of the city. A. location in the heart of the business center, although at an Increased cost, is far more desir able than a more obscure one. In the nature of things a corporation like the Bell Telephone Company wishes to be right in the heart of the trade center.
