" . ' THE CHARLOTTE NEWS, AUGUST 171906. r, 8 TODAY'S Ri A DI FTC (1 COTTON New Orleans Times-Democrat Sum mary Cotton. (Furnished by Gibert & Clay of New Orleans, La,) . ., Xow Orleans, La., Aug. 17. On the surface the talent gave but passing rhoncht to the developments of a dis tinct note of pessimism in some of tne rouim field reports, and a further de cline was recorded through a mid- ses sion reaction caused the recovery of part of the loss, and checked the more rampant enthusiasm. On the whole, professionals appear just about as bearish as ever, and small company of conservatives is gaining recruits slowly enough. Just where the turning point will be encountered is one of the darkest secrets of the cotton trade. But it is fully probable that once Americans cease deluging Liverpool with orders to sell the stuff the for eign market will evidence some Itmi oi a reactionary tendency. Then loo, careful sttudents of the staple expect spot market conditions to exert a bene licial influence on speculative values, lor the reason that basis broaening iattors are now at work and none but radicals believe the interior will fol low option fluctuations to the limit of speculative endurance. Should the far mer again stand pat, tne about face will come in short order some daj' but mean while selling the other man's property is a very entertaining little game, and is not worymg anybody either. - New York Sun Summary Cotton. (Furnished by Gibert & Clay of New Orleans, La.) New York, Aug. 17. Cotton rallied from an early decline, and ended at ibout the closing prices of Wednesday. Che recovery was traceable largely to covering of shorts and more or less new buying on the theory that a rally was due, after the severe decline and drastic liquidation of late, and espec ially as the short interest is consider ed large. Liverpool sent somewhat bet ter advices than expected, and the market here opened a shade higher. But leading interests again sold freely ?.nd prices soon weakened and declined with room traders selling. Spot inter ests sold too. and the South sent'Jarge selling orders. The weather was favor able in the main and the crop reports v.ere of an encouraging tenor, as a rule though some complaints of insect fiamage. shedding, etc., were received from the Southwest. Later on a slow rally set in owing to recovering by rfiorts, including some of the more prominent members of the bear party and there was also more or less buying for a turn on the long side by those who believed that the market was en titled to at least a temporary upturn, a view in which even some of the bears concurred. There are few however, who have faith in more than a moder ate recovery, and even that may not occur. The weather and crop reports ?re so very generally favorable, that the bears apparently as confident as ever that the market must decline to a lower level. SOUTH CAROLINA CAMPAIGN CLOSING Special The News. Greenville, S. C, Aug. 17. The South Carolina gubernatorial cam-1-aign closes at Greenville, Aug. 20th, the primary date being Aug. 28th.' 1 he contest has been hard fought, with the State dispensary as the main issue. The campaign coming right upon the conclusion of the work of the investigating committee, which uncovered in the administra tion of that institution all sorts of graft and rottenness, has been con ducive to all kinds of ill fooling be tween several of the candidates for minor State offices, notably thoso of attorney general, contested for by Messrs. Lyon and Rr.gsdale, Mr. Lyon Laving been chief inquisitor during the hearings at the dispensary in vestigation. But the main interest in the con test centers in the gubernatorial can didates, because upon tho incoming executive will largely rest the burden of reforming or abolishing the State whiskey machine. In the , contest , for governor there are eight candidates Messrs. Ansel, Brunson, Sloan, McMahan, Manning, Edwards, Bleaso and Jones. Among these aspirants Mr. Ansel is tho only one who has declared himself in favor of each county deciding for itself whether or not its people want dis pensaries. Ho is' a local option man, and opposed unalterably to the State machine. Blease and Manning are dispensary men. Manning wants some reform ing done, but, Blease says it is all right just as it is. Brunson and Jones are ' for iron-c!ad prohibition. Edwards and Sloan are willing to let the people do the leading and have all the opinions; they aro will ing to follow. McMahan's hobby is State life insurance; and with argu ments favoring his scheme he usually takes up all the time (ten minutes) allotted tho gubernatorial candidates. So the contest narrows itself down to a run between Ansel and Manning, both lawyers, and popular in their own sections, either of whom would make an acceptable executive. Ansel is a people's man has al ways been a peoples' man. He does not attempt to "run with the hare and keep with the hounds," but he is straightforward und clear in his con victions. That's tho main reason pol iticians have accused him of "straddling." He is strong in the up country and has legions of friends alon& tho coast. : Manning, on the other hand, is lit tle known up-State and on the coast, his stronghold being in the middle counties, where the dispensary still has friends. 1 SATURDAY WE WILL SELL CHOICE OF OUR LADIES' $3.00 AND $2.50 TAN OXFORDS. , . - $1.50 the pair NONE SENT ON APPROVAL SO BE 40 . ir-.-i.'! Buyers in the primary market were less eager for goods for the day but the relative j falling off in trade was not as somei factors looked for in the face of ad vancing prices for cloth and . declin ing prices for cotton virtually while the business was going on. Many or ders are in hand awaiting the appear- ancs of goods that are now scarce. The trading is limited in many direct ions by the inability to secure goods for quick delivery, and there are many things that suow that large quantities of goods will be wanted before the first of October. 11 A HEALING GOSPEL.
