B., July 4.—During a severe electrical storm last night the Church of England Cathedral was struck by lightning and destroyed by- fire which followed. The loss is about $140,000. The church was considered one of the finest in existence. That Terrible Census. The census had thrown the ladies into a state of papdemonium. “It’s perfectly ridiculous,” declared the elderly Lady Sliptruth, at her pop ular third Thursday gathering. “What the government wants to know our ages for is more than I can say. Still,” she added as she artlessly tapped her much-rouged cheek with her fan, “if all the world wants to know. I’m 37— well, I suppose they must.” “Will they believe me, I wonder,” asked Mrs. Tooshore, “when I admit to having lived 27 long years?” “My own twenty-second birthday,” simpered the Hon. Ninan Twenty, “falls during census week. How old are you, my dear?” “I—I’m not sure,” replied the youth- ful and truthful Miss Candour. ‘‘Ag- cording to the present rate of reckon ing, you see, I don't think I can be born yet.”—Tit-Bits.
