Conrad Is 65 Years Old Jhe Minister Will Preach a Birthday Sermon Tomorrow at His \Church in Nojth Charlotte^Facis oj Interest in His Lije, Rev. S. F. Conrad,' the pastor of North Charlotte Baptist church, will preach a birthday sermon to his con gregation tomorrow in North Char lotte, as it is his sixty-flfth birthday and comes on Sunday. He was ordain ed to the gospel ministry May 10, 1ST4, and has filled important pastor ates in Greensboro. Winston, I^xing- ton. Walnut Cove, Mocksville, Waugh Town, Louisville and Charlotte. His work has been largely pioneer work' and has served as missionary under appointment from the board of mis sions of the Baptist state convention for about twenty-five years of his ministerial life. He has built many churches and completed a number which were started by otherB. Churches were organized under his ministry at T^xlngton, Lewisville, Farmington, Huntsville, Mascedonla, Walnut Cove and Ruffin. He has serv ed quite a number of village and county pastorates besides and held a great many protracted meetings. Since his home in Charlotte he was for about seven years the field edi tor of the North Carolina Baptist, with Mr. John A. Oates, managing editor, and which was a pioneer pa per in the interest of prohibition and was a most Important factor in the state in bringing It to a successful issue. He was In the war as captain of two companies of seventeen-year- old boys, and was In the first bom bardment of Fort Fisher and the battle of Bentonsville. Was three times in the hands of the enemy. W*i captured at Morganton by Kirk’s raid and his first company, compos ed of Yadkin and Surry boys, were carried to Chicago and held as pris oners to the close of the war. His text tomorrow will be taken from Pa. 16:6: “The lines have fallen to me in ^pleasant places; yea I have a goodly heritage,” Few ministers do more good or as much beloved as Mr. Conrad. Not only his own church people but peo ple of all creeds unite in wishing him many happy days. More Autoists in Recot der^s Court Another batch of Charlotte autoista paid the costs in this momin’s selt- sion of recorder’s court for violation of the state law that requires every automobile to have a license tag in visible position. They were Messrs. H. C. Murrlll, J. E. Schatt, W. 8. Byrd and O. B. Sain. A nol pros was taken in the case of Mr. V. j. Outhrie on the sajne charge. Robert Miller, a colored hack driv er, was declared not guilty of disoir derly conduct Jewish New Year Being Observed The small band of orthodox Jews in the city will observe the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, which is today. The new year began at sunset today. The new year began at sec of sun last evening and continues until set of sun this evening. Rosh Hashanah is commemorated as the day of the blowing of the trump ets which is the seventh new moon of the Hebrew calendar. The blowing of trumpets is a reminder to the Ishmalite that a new period of time is begun. “The Biblical basis for the observ ance of the first day of Tishri as a New Yeor's day and the most sol emn day of the Jewish calendar next to Yom Kippur of the Day of Atone ment, is found in the reference to Zikkaron (‘memorial day’) In Leviti cus xxlll, 24, which reads: “In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a Sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.” Ezra also refers to the day as one holy to the Lord,” (Nehemiah viii, 9.) The day is a day of remembrance as well as rejoicing, of self examina tion. After the solemn services on the evening of FVIday and the morning of Saturday, the Hebrew greeting is heard on all sides, signifying: “A good year” or Mayest thou be in scribed (In the Book of Life) for a good year.” In later years a cus tom has appeared of sending to friends New Year’s greeting cards of various designs, colors and inscriptions. When the earnest devotions of the day are done, the festival Is made an occas ion of social and domestic rejoicing. The Day of Atonement, or Yom Kip pur Is the culmination of th© peniten tial season. It Is observed by fasting and prayer. The Feast of Tabernacles which fol lows, lasts eight days, the last day of solemn assembly. NOTARY PUBLIC During my -16 or 18 years* experience as a PUBLIC NOTARY, I have represented bankers, lawv^rs and leading financiers in Charlotte', where a Notary Public was, required in the final closing of big business deals. IT has ohen happened that the entire settlement for all parties concerned, representing thousands of dollars in money, checks, notes, etc., passed through itoy hands with me acting as “middle man” in the deal. There is a reason for this,-1, e.,—I give* all business entrusted to me as a Notary Pub lic, prompt, courteous, confidential, and intelligent attention. If you have any such deals to be closed, give me your business, and you Trill be prop erly represented, and every detail of the matter properly executed. I conl- mand business as a Notary Public on business merit, and handle all such matters on a strictly first-class high-toned business manner. ’Phone m^ any time you need a Notary Public. Incidentally—give me your business — My time is my own—have horse and buggy, and will go anywhere—an:* time—day or night—to act as Notary. Office ‘Phone 243—Residence ’Phone 1276-J. FRANK F. Yes, Malinda, we saw the stuff day and night; have been saving it for 30 years, and have never had to shut down on acount of high water, low water, storms, cyclones or lack of grease. WHEN IT THUNDERS IN CALIFORNIA V your lights may go out and the tallow dip has to be brought from Its hiding; the cars may strand you, and your connection for Stouts missed bj !; seconds; the Henderson Wile folk may fool and fumble and fizzle about while crime stalks about at will, but the MUTUAL BUILDING AND LOAN grinds on just the same, earning a goodly interest for the widow and the orphan, the capitalist and the wise man of business. Yea, my erring and procrastinating friend, it does more. In summer heat, and in winter’s cruel blast, when other financial institutions are tottering and fading from view, carrying with them the fortunes of the affluent as well as the savings of the poor and needy,/this ^ip sails into port on time, and as she ties up at the wharf every 3 naonths, a cargo of sunshine and happiness is un loaded. THIS IS THE PROPER CAPER, BOYS, and you’re wasting precious time and opoprtunity by dallying with other schemes and propositions which spell disappointment and failure. NEW SERIES NOW OPEN. , .
