The work ol the National Association for the Prevention o. Tuberculosis, which was begun just ten years ago was reviewed at the opening session cf the tenth annual meeting of the as sociation here today. Dr. Charles J. Hatfield, of Philadel phia, one of the directors, reported that after ten years work there are over 2,500 anti-tuberculosis agencies now with less than 150 such agencies in 1905. The agencies today include 550 tu berculosis sanatoria and hospital, 41tt dispensaries, nearly 1,200 anti tuberculosis associations, and 250 open air schools and fresh air class Relieves Bladder Distress and Weak ness. "While the National Association cannot lay claim to the organization of each and every individual piece of anti-tuberculosis work developed says the report, exaggeration to great part of thfcs ! movement has been- stimulated di- ! rectly by our association. It is, there I fore, significant to you, who are mem ! bers of the association to note that I while the entire budget of the nation 1 al office for this period has been ' only $200,000, federal, state and local anti-tuberculosis agencies, both pub- i lie and private, have expended dur ing this same period practically $100,- 000.000." Dr. Hatfield also reported upon the Red Cross Christmas Seal sale for last year and estimated that when all the returns are in, the aggregate well established as compared! sale wnj reacn more than 43,000.000 seals, a gain of 10 per cent over 1912. Plans for the sale next fall have already been perfected and the print ing of the seals will soon be begun. Some of the most significant develop ments of new work during the past year have been in the states of South Carolina, Oklahoma and South Dakota. In all of these states the new activities have been stimulated by the eale of Red Cross Seals. If time is money, when a fellow doesn't make money it may be because he hasn't time. Commissioner of Agriculture W. A. Graham says that the weather conditions just now are ideal for the development of the wheat crop in North Carolina, and that the outlook now is for as fine a yield as the state has ever had. Major Gra ham says, too, that the farm work generally is now well advanced. The cotton crop and the corn crop is about all in in many sections, although, there are sections- where the low land set aside for land is not planted. Corn and cotton are both coming up nicely in cases where the seeding was early enough for the germination to be that far advanced. Poe To Speak In Memphis. Mr. Clarence Poe, editor of the Pro gressive Farmer, has accepted an in vitation to deliver an address be fore the Southern Sociological Confer ence at Memphis, Tenn., next week, on "Developing the Community Spirit in Rural Sections." He will also make a number of commencement addresses this month as follows: Lillington, May 11; Smithfield May 15; Wakelon, May 21; Winston-Salem, May 29. At Work On State House. Workmen began today the task of renewing the steam pipes throughout the state house for the heating system. This is a part of the old contract for the establishment of a new central heating plant for all the state build ings and the renewal of the equipment in buildings where the old equipment was not up to an acceptable standard for good and economical service. The central heating plant has been com pleted for three or four months and did service during he later part of iuc niuiu auu tan diiuq. The exterior work on the remodeling and enlargement of the government building here is about completed ex cept for the cleaning of the old stone on the front of the building to har monize with the new stone that had to be used. The other outside walls are about all cleaned and look like new stone. It will repuire a year probably to get the building ready for re-occupancy. The improvements are costing upwards of $250,000. Pardon Granted. Henry Reed, of Catawba county, gets a pardon from Governor Craig from the remainder of a two-years' sentence on the Gaston county roads for as sault with deadly wapon having al ready served much the greater portion of the sentence. The pardon is on condition that he remain law-abiding Several physicians certify that the prisoner ha3 a well-developed case of pellagra and that his presence in the convict camp is endangering the health of the other convicts. He has served 13 months of his two-years' sentence. Graham County Superintendent. The Graham county authorities re port to the state department of edu cation that J. H. Moody has been elect ed superintendent of the public schools of the county to succeed T. A. Carpen ter, deceased. State Superintendent Joyner expresses regret that Graham county did not take up the matter of consolidating the superintendency for that county with one or another ot tne adjacent counties with a view to hav ing one superintendent devote his en tire time to the worK instead ot continuing a superintendency exclus ively for Graham with only a small and necessarily ineffective amount of time devoted to the actual supervision and improvement of the public schools. ' -. Dr. Joyner says sucu a cuusuiiuaiiuu cf superintendency has been effect ed in Washington and Tyrrell counties and is working finely and he believes that the plan can be worked out to the mutual advantage of the counties so consolidating in many more cases as in every part of the state where there are contiguous small and weak counties. The Insurance Investigation. It is learned that the special legisla tive commission for the investigation of the conduct of fire insurance com panies in North Carolina will be re sumed here on June 11th, the desire of the commission being to complete the taking of evidence at this sitting. There have already been two sessions of several days duration here and much evidence has been taken. State Senator Bryant, of Durham, is chair man of the insurance commission and the law firm of Manning & Kitchin Is counsel for the state In bringing evi dence before the commission and con ducting the examinations. Person Good Roads Campatgn. Dr. Joseph Hyde Pratt, state geolo gist, spent the past week in Person county helping in the campaign for the $15,000 bond issue for Person that is to be voted on May 12th. He says there is every indication now that the measure will go through all right and that the people are being thoroughly aroused to the importance of the construction and maintenance of good roads. Num bers of other counties are taking for ward steps in this direction and the calls made on him for engineering in laying out and constructing standard highways is steadily on the increase and far in advance of his means ot supplying the demand.
