Carson Elected Moderator Of Next A. R. P. Presbytery The First Presbytery of the A. R. P. Synod, which convened at the Hunters-' ville A. R. P. church on Tuesday after noon, adjourned yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The retiring moderator's sermon was preached at the opening session on J lllJl BUJZtU after which Rev. E. B. Hunter of Sha- rron. S. C, was introduced as the pre siding officer for the present meeting. Mr. Hunter made a splendid presiding officer, putting through the business coming before the body with dis-' patch. i At the opening session a place for the fall meeting was selected and the moderator elected. Neely's Creek church, near Rock Hill, S. C., was se- lected and Rev. E. G. Carson, pastor of the" Villa Heights congregation, in this city, was elected as moderator. At a later session an urgent invita- tion came from the Presbyterian church at Matthews to hold the fall meeting there, as the Mecklenburg Presbytery of the Southern-Presbyter- ian Church had been invited and had accepted the invitation. A resolution, thanking these good people for their kind invitation was passed, but as the place of meeting had been select ed the day before no effort was made to reconsider the former action. I ReV. R. A. Lummus. of Edgemoor. S. C, resigned as Presbyterial superin tendent of Sabbath schools and young people's work and Rev. W. H. Steven- son of Lesslie. was elected to this nnitinfi Rev. A. T. Lindsay, president of Lin- wood College, resigned as pastor of Pissrah conereeation near Gastonia, and the pastoral relation was orederd dissolved bv the Presbytery, mis is one of the best churches in the Presbytery. Trial discourses for license were delivered by Rev. D. T. Lauderdale, of Winnsboro, S. C, and Rev. W. H. Quinn. of York county. These were li- censed, Rev. Dr. R. G. Miller presid- ing at this service. Two important resolutidns were pass ed yesterday afternoon, one endorsing the proposition to establish in North Carolina a home for feeble minded and indigent children and the other; endorsing the proposed establishment within the bounds of the state a nome for fallen women. t Rev. J. M. Bigham is pastor of the Huntersville congregation. i Of the two young men licensed. Rev. D. T. Lauderdale will take up work the first of June at Forest Grove church, in this city, and Rev. W. H. Quinn will work in Kentucky. i EDUCATION BECOMING MORE ELASTIC. (Columbia Record.) A striking illustration of the chang ing conditions in educational ideas may be found in the growing apprecia tion on the part of leading universities of their responsibility to the public, felicitously observes the Journal of the American Medical Association. In former generations a university was regarded as a thins apart, and a col lege professor was looked on, not only by the humerous paragraphers of the newspapers, but also by the mas of peo pie, as a man living in a world of ideas, without any connection - with practical affairs. Today our leading universities are recognizing not only the opportunity, but also the duty of making available their knowledge for the benefit of the masses. This ten dency is highly commendable, espec ially in the field of public health and prevention of disease. The Harvard Medical School has a standing com mittee an public lectures which ar- ranges each year for a course of SunA. day afternoon talks by members of the faculty. These talks are open to the general public, and are on topics of general interest. In Minnesota the daily press is co-operating in the same kind of work. A series of articles on disease and its prevention by Dr. E. P. Lyon, dean of the University of Min nesota Medical School, recently ap peared in the Minneapolis Journal. The University of, Missouri is one of the few state universities that have recog nized the growing tendency by the or ganization of a distinct department on public halth. A series of bulletins for public reading and distribution are . being issued. The five so far complet ed are on "Bacteria and Disease," "The Prevention of Typhoid Fever." "The Prevention of Contagious Diseases In School Children," "Resuscitation" and "The Relation of Sight and Hearing to Early School Life." Each of these uni versities has apparently worked out its plans in accordance with the needs fXtii Minnesota, newspaper articles, and in Missouri, pamphlets on specific sub- jects seem to meet existing conditions.
