XitE CAIMHjyA JOURNAL Wednesday, April 27., 1966 Page Three Comy-Flahes A Biased Opinion: Boys Aren’t Romantic By CORNY STILWELL In spring a young man’s thoughts turn to what the young girls have been thinking of all winter. I’ve often wondered why this statement usually runs true. Certainly no young man is victim of never being plagued by thoughts of romance. I mean ... boys will be boys and all that junk But seriously, it s my biased opinion that boys are simply not ron\antic. For instance, when a couple is viewed at a flick and the scenes are quite suggestive . . . what’s our fine and coura geous suitor doing while his lovely bundle is cuddled sweetly against his shoulder? You guessed it! Munching on the buttered popcorn. What can cure a young lady’s roman tic inclinations faster than a slimy hand patting her knee and gooky Ups whispering sloppy nothings into her ear? And after this build-up our young hero has the gall to wonder why his efforts are in vain and his cutie leaves icicles hanging on her eye-Uds. Take the situation of the lovers walking late at night in the park. She’s staring at the stars hoping his thoughts are running hand and hand with her own ... and from the sUence around them it seems that he may he in deep thought concerning the future events. ’Then oor briidrt Don Juan reaches out for his compunion’s hand and pulls her closer to him. “This is it,” she. “This is it,” thinks he. So he musters up his courage and Uurts, “Sally, I’ve been thinking for quite s(nne time now about how close we’ve grown to be.” “Yes?” “Well, Sally, I feel that I know you so weU and all, but Pm a Uttle uneasy about a^dng you something.” “Oh, Herbie, don’t be nervous.” “WeU Sal, would you . . .” “Go on, Herbie, ask me.” “Okay, Sally, would you lend me $15 ... you see, I need a new stick shift for my car and...” And then, there is always the scene of the quiet night at home in front of the T.V. Remember, it’s spring. Roses outside the house smeU so heavenly and our fair maiden is seated on the sofa and there is sledhead, our hero. What a lovely couple. The T.V. is turned down low and there’s beer and pretzels for him. She looks so cute in pink and bless her, she’s wearing Wind Song. Every young maiden knows that “he can’t get you out of his mind when you’re wearing Wind Song.” But even if he could resist the perfume, beer and pretzels, and pink outfit, no man could resist a soft bat of the lash and a sweet coo. What does our hero say as his honey cuddles closer and whispers, “What else can I get for you, sweetie?” “Just one thing, Sal, would you mind changing the channel?” Well, there you have it. Our “romantic” hero, Herbie, stands—in general—as an example of the college Joes. Mind of the above situations, watch it, will ya ... a sticky hand you now, I said general. But if you’re a suspect or a victim on the knee ruins a pair of hose. LITTLE MAN ON CAMPUS Would You Believe? By LEE WASSON Journal Staff W.riter 1. Who is Bob Kane? 2. SCOPE lists 123 different or ganizations and opens the way to over 100,000 summer community service opportunities for college students. It is a service provided to students and organizations for their mutual convenience and is entirely underwritten by a grant from the Ford Foundation. By PAUL BOSWELL The student body is filled with talent, not the least of which is musical talent. Buddy Hyman, a freshman, is a member of the “Damascans,” a young recording group which has just begun In' taste success. His group recently made a 45 R. P. M. recording which was released about a uionth ago on the Pyramid label. Tbe fast side “Go ’Way Girl” and the slow side “Diane” were both written by Buddy, and are presently being distributed over the East ern Seaboard in eight states at one hundred copies per state. The success story of this group which has been in existence only six months is an interesting one. Organization and discovery, the two ingredi ents in the combo’s success, were accomplished through long hours of practice and a Uttle luck. The beginnings of the “Damas cans” may be traced back to last summer when Buddy and two friends were attending a church youth retreat and participated in a talent show just for fun. Buddy recalls, “We were just kidding around, but we got some compliments. When we went back home, we decided to get serious and start a larger group. We named the group after the name of the cabin in which we had performed at the retreat. “Our big break came when Sonny Smith heard us at the Matthews Student Council dance and invited us to the Arthur Smith Studios to re cord.” The tapes were sold to Pyramid and the group was under contract. The combo is probably the youngest anywhere. At least it is the youngest group outside of Dino, Desi, and Billy. Davie Naples, drums, is fifteen; Toni Naples, female organist, is thir teen; Buddy, lead guitar, is the oldest at eighteen; Scott Warren, lead singer, is sixteen, as is Jim Pope, bass guitar. Lanny Smith, a nephew of Arthur Smith, serves as manager for the group. With their first recording only one month old. Buddy has written tour more songs which will be released in the near future. Local D. J.’s will likely be playing the current platter soon. Things are certainly looking up for the “Damascans.” Pharisees No, the Journal doesn’t heed Pharisees but it does need Scribes. You know, Man. That’s Biblical for writers. We’ve gotten quite a few new writers lately but we still need more. (There’s always room for one more. Babe.) If you feel the urge to knock out a news story now and then, leave your name and phone number at the Union desk. We’ll contact you. Writing is really a lot of fun. Besides, you get your name in the paper. ^ - '’v ^ s t -Vx ^ the WORLD FAMOUS Fine Italian Food OPEHIMEX 1318 W. Morehead St. Charlotte, N.
