Entertainment (Continued from Page 4) Ramsey Ramsey Lewis may be one of the most prolific producers of albums ever, but he’s no worse because of it. His newest plastic is MOTHER kJATURE’S SON. All tunes on this Cadet release are Lennon-McCartney compositions. The mood is one of subdued pantheism, and the orchestration is a great aid to its creation. The electronic effects on the Moog Synthesize are intffesting, to say the least. And Ramsey is no stranger to the black and whites; his solos still niake the album. For those of you who miss the trio, just lend an ear to ■■Julia” on this album and you will be consoled by the skillful string soliloquies and the undertone beat of a full rhythm section. It is at least as interesting as the I-thou intimacy of the Trio. “Back in the USSR” is a strange selection — brassy and citified. “Dear Prudence” begins slinky and grows to a sort of funky intensity. “Cry Baby Cry” is sad, and Lewis’s genius is hidden by the orchestration. “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey” serves as a reminder that L&M can blow your mind anytime they want to. Ramsey does some fancy one-handing here. The only sound on the album that could be pointed to as the “Lennon-McCartney sound” is “Sexy Sadie.” It’s not one of the best on the album. Lewis has been better, but that’s no crime. Donovan's Hits Donovan’s Greatest Hits; Epic Records, BXN 26439 Donovan’s GREATEST HITS album is exactly that. If you are a Donovan fan, chances are that you already have most of the songs included on other albums. “Mellow Yellow,” “Sunshine Superman,” “Catch the Wind,” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man” are just a few of the oldies but goodies on the record. My favorite is an original which I haven’t seen on any of the other albums by this young poet-composer, Lalena. I can’t say that this is his best album, but it is good. If you like Donovan, but aren’t quite sure, this is the album for you; but if you like him and have several of his other albums, don’t bother. Unique Blues Blue Matter; Savoy Brown Blues Band, London Records PAS 72027 BLUE MATTER, by the Savoy Brown Blues Band, is one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long time. They have combined blues and jazz and come up with a good good sound. This is their second album. Their first is also an excellent example of musical dexterity. I’m not sure how many people are part of the Savoy Brown Blues Band, but they are all good musicians. Some of the songs are original; “Train to Nowhere” being a perfect example of the way they can handle a jazz piece; “She’s got a ring in his nose and a ring on her hand” is a very clever Mothers of Invention type song. Three already established songs prove their talent in blues; “It Hurts Me Too” by James Nolan, and “Don’t Turn Me From your Door” by John Lee Hooker are done very well, but “Lousiana Blues,” “Muddy Waters,” is great. It’s the best rendition of this song that I’ve ever heard. It’s a good addition to your collection whether you dig blues, jazz, or rock. How about that! Intramural Standings f continued from page 5) SNOW ALTERS ALL A Virgin Campus The Saturday to Sunday change of campus was more remarkable this past weekend than it has ever been before. The raw red wound where the gym will stand had been the most noticable addition to the campus lately. The buildings which stood red or white against bright green or lazy brown grass has long since lost their eye appeal. That was the way it was early Saturday beneath a grey promise of snow. The promise was realized Saturday afternoon , and the campus was glamorous. The gym hill appeared beneath what seemed to be a soft covering of white. The red buildings looked like dull colored cherries carefully placed on white silk. They were decorated with gleaming jewel-like icicles • The campus had the elegance of a young lady, in her first formal, wearing a necklace and diamonds. The concrete walks which interlace the campus became fleecy covering several feet deep in places. From the back of the Union the whole world stretched forth in white with slight sketchings in green and black to give accent to the canvas of snow. The very edges of the steps shown through the snow like part of a cake beneath icing. There was a flowing smoothness over all the campus. The lake looked like a mirror dropped into a mound of cotton balls. There existed a quietness and a solitude quite pleasant in form. The occasional trees were rebellious comments on the vast expanse of textured sameness. They rose rudely from the satiny purity as protest against the uniform costuming of the conforming landscape. An unsuccessful rebellion! Their asymmetrical limbs reached towards the pregnant clouds, but they were constrained by the chalky heaviness of snow clusters. The sterile campus wore a bleached countenance and an icy smile. Deserted. And who's to say if the milky attitude was more or less beautiful than the day-to-day humanness of its normal state'.’ Often imitated The Cellar 300 EAST MOREHEAD ST.
