Sociological or political? Who knows? “Hungry Freaks, Daddy” is THE best of the mothers. It’s on there too. The album winds up with “America Drinks and Goes Home.” Who can say what Verve had in mind when they gave Zappa the go ahead? I think they were out to make money. It doesn’t matter. The product is worth having. It’s one of the best Zappanthologies ever conceived (in the mind, that is). “Suzy! Suzy Creamcheese, this is your conscience speaking....” Poli Sci Appointee Greot Gilberto Astrud Gilberto is a soft-spoken brunette who has been at both the top and the bottom of the charts in her short life. Not yet thirty years old, Astrud rose to fame with her golden “The Girl from Ipanema”, and then she plummeted down, down, down, back into the ranks of obscurity. There, she grew up. The Astrud Gilberto of the new Verve release I HAVEN’T GOT ANYTHING BETTER TO DO is older, more sensible and more sensitive than the quick-hitting girl of “Ipanema” fame. She has become a woman in both outlook and tone. Now she can ascend to the fame and glory for more than a one-night stand. She has arrived. And I HAVEN’T ANYTHING BETTER TO DO is the notice of her arrival. Miss Gilberto has said that, with this album, she has finally recorded an entire Ip of the type of songs that she really goes for. Sensuous and sentimental. Almost entirely exotic is the mood created by Asrtud. Her spectrum of sounds proceeds from the soft, sentimental strings to the bouncy bossa nova beat. “The Sea Is My Soul (I remember When)” includes this entire range. Jim Webb’s “Didn’t We?” js another tune to be remembered. Two of the best songs on the record are the Bacharach-David combination’s “Trains And Boats And Planes” and Harry Nilsson’s “Without Him” (made popular by Jack Jones about a year ago). These two, along with “Wee Small Hours” form the unbeatable vertex of side two. Brooks Arthur, Albert Gorgoni, and Val Valentin have combined to produce, conduct, and engineer (respectively) this album. Who could do it better? Miss Gilberto has said that love will always be in style, and it is this premise that the album is imilt around. See it you agree. The album opens with “Look to Your Heart,” from the TV production “Our Town.” Next, from the Broadway musical “I Do! 1 Do!” is “My Cup Runneth Over.” The third selection is “Love In A Home” from “Li’l Abner.” Following this niimer is “In These Crazy Times,” and, from “The Fantasticks” is “Try to Remember.” The warmth and beauty of Mr. C. continues on side number two with “Sunrise, Sunset” from “Fiddler on the Roof.” “How to Handle a Woman” of “Canielot,” “When You’re In Love,” “You’re Nearer,” and “The Father of Girls” round out the album. If you enjoy Como (and who doesn’t?) and have a special someone, you can curl up on a cold night or spend a warm spring afternoon with this album and reach the lengthy gaumat of that sensation known as love-this album certainly does. Oh, by the by. it’s RCA Victor LSP-4052. Enjoy yourself; enjoy your love. Dr. Hugli McEniry, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, reported that he has been looking for someone to offer the course since September and that this announcement is not an answer to the demands of the black students. It was an inevitable step that just took a while, it seems. The teacher of the course is Justin E. Uchendu, a full-time professor of history at Barber Scotia College in Concord, N. C. Uchendu, a Biafran national, will commute to UNC-C while retaining his position at Barber Scotia. Mr. Uchendu now becomes the first black faculty member to be hired by UNC-C. The course is titled Introduction to African History and is taught at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It was expected that about twenty students would attend the first session, which was held yesterday afternoon. There will be two hours of credit awarded to all those who successfully complete the course. Both white and black students may take it, and the grading will be on the normal grading scale. The principal area of concentration will be the culture and history of Africa. Mr. Uchendu has yet to announce what particular phases of African history will be stressed.
