■sail page six/the journal/december I, 1971 The Mon ...with a mission Bill Foster has brought a record of outstanding success to the job as head basketball coach at LfNCC. A native of Hemingway, South Carolina, he attended Wingate College and graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1958. He was a starting forward for both Wingate and Carson-Newman, while finding enough time to achieve cum laude academic honors and a listing in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He began his coaching career during his senior year at Carson-Newman. Sidelined by a shoulder separation, he guided the Eagles’ freshman squad to a 19-1 record. After graduation, he returned to his home state of South Carolina and in three years as head basketball coach at Marion High School compiled a 42-21 mark. Foster resigned in 1961 to enter the graduate school of the University of Tennessee where he earned the M.S. in Physical Education and Administration. Coach Foster He accepted a position as director of athletics and head basketball coach at Shorter Miss. State, Coliseum debut White. The second game with the Governors of Austin Peay is likely to be a little tougher. Austin Peay, of the Ohio Valley Conference, is a little larger school (3,800) located in Clarksville, Tenn. and, with nine returning lettermen, a close contest could be in the offing. UNCC battled the Governors twice last year squeaking by 86 to 84 in the first match and winning by a more comfortable margin of 73 to 58 in the second. So Austin will be seeking revenge. This game will be in Clarksville on Dec. 4, at 7;30 p.m. The Bulldogs of Mississippi State will be the 49er’s next opponents. This is their first meeting with Kermit Davis’ team and promises to be one of the toughest this year. With an enrollment of 9,200, Miss. St. has four returning lettermen from a team who went 15-10 in the respected Southeastern Conference last season. Davis is starting his second season with the Bulldogs and will be trying hard to put a notch in his gun at the expense of UNCC. He has strong experienced players and many promising sophomores. The game will mark the 1971 Charlotte Coliseum debut for the 49ers on Dec. 6, at 8:00 p.m. The Coliseum has been the site for some of the best basketball in the nation, and the 49ers look like they will fit right in with the crowd. 15-8 UNCC 62 Tenn.
