Since they have to become better oriented to their positions, the freshmen will improve week by week. Also, their record will not indicate their future value to the varsity. As Coach Foster explained, “All of these freshmen have the potential to be good varsity players. This is our first objective, to make them ready to play on the varsity squad. With their height, if we played a zone (defense) it would be hard for them to lose.” He went on to say, “When they get to the varsity, they’ll have to play man-to-man defense, and many are going to play as sophomores so they have to be ready.” Out of the four freshmen graduating to the varsity from last year’s squad, one will start for the varsity and the others will be spot starters and should see a great deal the young 49ers BEN ANSLEY; No. 52, 6’7”, 200 lbs.
