Golfers finish in top five Page fifteen/Carolina Journal/October 24, 1978 By Jim Dedmon The UNCC men's golf team finished in the top five this past week with a fourth place overall finish in the Elon Col legiate Tournament held on the 36-hole Indian Valley golf course in Burlington, N.C. The par 70 course as describ- led by Coach Floyd Kerr was, “a very tough course that was pretty tricky for everyone throughout the tourna ment.” Winning the tourna ment was host Elon Col uni©n KWIKSTOP (2 mi. n of UNCC on hwy 49) GRAND OPENING DISCOUNT BEVERAGES Imported beer& wine 10% discount on all cases of beer lege shooting a team score of 367 for the first day and finishing the se cond day with a 369 giv ing the team a total score of 736 for the tourney. Following in se cond place was Guilford College (score unavailable), third place finisher was James Madison pulling off a 393-385 giving them a final score of 778, and the 49ers followed with a 390-389 totalling 779. The medalist for the tournament was Elon golfer Dave Graham shooting three under par with a score of 69-68 totalling 137. Graham was the defending cham pion from the tourna ment last year and held his reign with an im pressive score for the two days. Leading the UNCC team was Tim Moser who shot a 79 the first day and following with a 73 finishing with a 152. Ray Reitzel was second among the squad with a consistent 77-77 totall ing 154. Also among the UNCC scorers were Mallory McDaniel, 75-81-156, Ralph Hawkins, 78-80-158, Richard Montefusco, 82-78-160, and finishing up the list was Chris Tucker shooting 81-81-162. It might be noted Tucker carried the weight of the 49er at tack at the Campbell In vitational finishing se cond in the field at that tourney. Although the team finished fourth in the event the 49ers are still playing as Kerr felt they would and sees the team as well within the goals it set at the beginning of the season, better so since they achieved that goal of winning two tournaments and finishing in the top five for the rest. Hoping for some spr ing tournaments and possibly an NCAA bid the team continues to do well despite their youth. Sports Specks By Jim Dedmon On the “Letters to the Students” page of this issue there is an article concerning the women's in tramural football review which appeared in the last issue. This column this week is an answer for this letter. In defense of myself. I have some information for the writer of said letter I think might be enlightening and better help you understand the reviews. First off I am a freshman this year and am sports editor. All records of the games are available to me through the Intramural Department. Sources and records reveal it is true as the letter stated the 7th Heaven Angels were undefeated last season and were not scored upon, however, the let ter doe snot mention of these six games three of them were won by forfeit. Also sources revealed the coach of the team has attended only about two of the games. I admit I was incorrect concerning practices for it seems there was a couple of practices at the beginning of the year which did not show optimum attendance. As far as my experience is concerned I played football for five years and have coached for one year. These articles were a new means of getting the students more coverage through the sports they are engaged in and was a first this year. It was a way for students to see their team’s name in the paper in stead of primarily the varsity sports. It seems like the old adage, “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t," fits the situation.
