Bowling team now club Page sixteenSCarolina JournaPOctober 24, 1U78 By James Braswell No one enjoys not hav ing money, but the bowl ing team fell into that unfortunate situation this summer when it was announced UNCC would field a cross country and baseball team. When UNCC added those new sports, they had to get some money from somewhere to sup port them — and the bowling team was the place. The athletic depart ment was funding the bowling team with a budget ranging from $3,000 to $4,000 per year, but the budget was completely abolished to make room for the new team’s budgets. This action left the bowling team without money. The money shor tage also meant the team was no longer a team. But Don McKay, who has coached the team since 1963, says there are no hard feel ings. “We (the bowling club) have no hard feel- Intramural Info The Budweiser College Super Sports Program will be taking place at UNCC beginning Nov. 10 with Volleyball Competition. Thus, the bowling team immediately became a club. But since they became a club at such a late date, they could only obtain a secondary charter from the Student Legislature, which meant they could not qualify for student funds. Where does the money come from? “The players have to pay for things they didn’t have to pay for last year, like hotel rooms and meals,” McKay explained. Cut ting" corners financially has become a route for survival for the team. For certain trips they made a year ago that would take an overnight stay will only take a day for this year’s club. The team has been spared (no pun intended) some financial agony. Pepsi Cola has donated $200 and North 29 Lanes has bought shirts for the team. Currently, the club carries 15 men and nine women. Last Saturday, the men’s team traveled to Spartanburg for a match against Wofford. Both the men’s and women's team have their first home match Saturday at North 29 Lanes against Spartanburg Methodist College. custom-made rings 1st Ho. Sanford 6 4th/6th Fl.
