The Democrats ot his district are proud of him. JAY GOl'LW. The New York Utrald of last week ives a graphic jiicture ot the inside and outside life of the great money king jiud railroad magnate, Jay Uonld, bo died last week. It shows that Gould at timea and for the most part he'd the reins ot the ieat financial Steed of Aiueiica. tdauy a man and many a film was leiuced to a hnancWl wieck by the strategic movements of that great, heartless money giant. JJe was the favor m "Wall Street" ot hh:u you have heard so aiuch. His history reads like a vomaDce. He leaves behind him 5100,000,000 iu wealth, but a uame as uneuviable as that of ti e horte swindler. The gieat daily and weekly journals of New York ard other cities aud of the whole Cfuntryhave been tiied with ac cc dnts ot his lite aud doings and of hi deatb, but uot an editoral have w yet seen giviug him praise for nebfe deeds. He seemed to glory in th-j financial ruiu of others ; aud as tt charity and liberality to the poor h knew no such ihiug. The only iL iUuca noted of his suowiug a dis p sitiou to tie liberal was on one 0(cmou, be cjutiibuted 10,000 to tt c Prebyierian church. Let us so how mucU of a deed this is. Suppose Gould made out of his oue hi.ndred milliou ouly 4 per cent, an, uuab.v (which is certainly less than he did make) this would give him a yuirly lucooie of $4,000,000 which is over 8333,000 per month and owr $11,000 per da ! His great wealth was pur chased at too high a price. The re epect of the community is the gui nea's stamp aud all coiu is counter fit unless thus stamped. Mr. Gould's policy rnav be easily found. We are highly pleased rhose onlv interest in the snccesB f their party is the hope that such sarty success will tend to their tersoual emolumeufc. The Demo ratic party is not entirely free 'rom this class. Although it has less of that eliment than any other pirty. We have fuil confidence in he ability of the Democratic party o successfully dispose of this class )ut it is a fact that cannot be succ essfully denied that this dangerous mil unworthy class is generally the oudesr. iu the clammer for office. It wisdom and caution is the watch vord in the selection of the officers, democracy is safe aud the party vill make a record that will stand out as a glorious light that will be .ble to withstand the torants of abuse and misrepresentations that will surely be brought to bear gainst it in the future. The vital Miueatiou of tha hour is, who shall we have for Collector of Internal Kevemie in this District,- This is a subject that should interest the moMt humble citizen. We suppose very county has at least one man uey think amply qualified to fill h'j hiijh position of trust aud hon ;r. We are no kCivil Service Re rormer"for from ie, we believe that ;he "rascala" should be turned oar, uid that tb4 victor should uot only ;eceive the honors, but the "spoils1' 'f victory. But we do not beleive L'uat every one who is now crying loudly "Lorl lord" shou'd come iu, if you will look closely into their onduct just before the electiou you sill find their prayer then to have oeeu like the Irishmans, thus "good Lord, good Devil,'' for they didu't Know into whose hands they would fall. If the right man is appointed Oollecter, this class of our worthy citizens will be assigned "a back seat in meeting". With all due re-- (ards for the candidates brought forward by other counties in this Oistrici beleiving they are all their fiends claim for them, we know Liucoln county has men who would :ill the bill of our ideal Collector to i dot.. We do uot ask that the ''resident till his cabinet from our -: junty. Neither do we ask that i9 appoint any ot our citizens as linisters to f. deign lands, (unless ie. could see his way clear to an. oint some of them (not Democrats) 0 Liberia.) During 41 years past, we have been running the Rutherford Col lege in the interest of ail Christian denominations in the Sootb, turn tag no applicant away for lack of money, but giviuget tuition to ov er 2,200 orphaua and iudigent, ma uy of whom are now tilling places ot honor and usefulness in Church and State. In all this period ot time, we have never attacked or attempted to harm, any other lriati tution iu the South ; but our aim has been to aid all that needed aid. and advance the intellectual aud moia! interests of our Southern people. Iu fact, we have kept the uitiou aud board so low that wo have often suffered lor cmtort our selves; yet without (-omplaiuing we 5 nave tovea on, sacnjicea on, suffered n, to benefit the Southern people. We yet need $2,000 to complete ihia General building, and we pro pose to name the College, legally for any one who will oecure us that -um by July 15, 1893, when the debt must be paid. During the past year we have been most maliciously attacked by an editor ot another State, who has never seen u or known us per sonally, and we have been charged vith "inefficiency" and the college denouueed as a "fraud,'' simply be oaus we demanded a retractiou or correction of a wrong, which, as we had bean informed by his bretheru, had been published in his sheet Now. 1 call upon the ten thousand who Lave matriculated here in 41 years, many of whom are iu the pub !it, at the bar, upou the judges bench, iu Professor's chair, handling the scalpol, and in other honorable employments, to come forward and -ay whether we are "inefficient," or the college is a "fraud''. If you think so, say so; but, if you do uot think so, say so. I know not what our caluminator has written, for I have not read a line of his production. But I have earned something of his attiek from others. These lines are writteu for my neuds aud relatives in L ocolu Catawba and Gaston couuties.
