Was the president offering a senseable suggestion to those who have persisted in making Mebane a dark town? The United States owes it to civilization to check, that anarchiest shirit so prevelant in Mexico. Terrorism is sweeping like a fire brand over the country, and there seems no law. Mexico is close on to our border. The interest of thousands of American citizens honestly acquired in Mexico is being destroyed, unchecked vandalism. by northern section of the city gave notice of the fact that the family cow had developed a genuine case of whooping couti^h. Several children, of the family are now suffering with a cough. The health officer is seeking to shift the burden of quarantining or placarding the cow to some member of the city board of commissioners, by whose au thority the ordinance requiring placards in all cases of whooping cough was passed,—Gieeniiuoio iMtwsk Valuable Lace Handkerchief*. THE AKSON OF BUSINESS. “As a business, fire insurance is conducted by companies with larger profits in the years when fires are plenty.’' This is the language of a man who has studied the fire insurance problem, and it largely accounts for the exposure of the wholesale arson business of New York recently. While it cost something to pay for fire loss, insurance companies have learned that there is much more profit in the business when there are frequent fires, it means more premiums, and a fire at most any point is seized upon as an excuse to advance rates. We have a fire loss in the United States about eight times as great as that in Europe, and while the fire loss of Europe is decreasing, that of the United States is increasing and at a rate greater by four times than the population. There is no one to regulate the cost of insurance except the officers of the company. They fix the rate, and you must pay it, or go without your fire protection. Tlie law can say what is legal interest on money loaned, and what is usury, it can say what railroads must charge for pas senger, or freight traffic, but it must keep its mouth shut about the South Eastern tariff Associa tion of fire Insurance Companies, and let them charge what suits their own sw^eet will. The marble palaces erected by the Insurance Companies as home offices in New York, Philadelphia, and the larger cities of this country, whose gilded domes seems to reach the clouds, are the silent, but eloquent proofs of the rich legacies of wealth the American people are pouring into their steel vaults, piling up monumen tal fortunes for their favored stock holders. But with ajseven and eight per cent rate of insur ance at unfortunate points, in North Carolina and a condition that in every sense needs correction, the Legislatures fought to a stand still a bill to investigate fire insurance in North Carolina .two years ago and why? Ask soma of Brough tons lobbyest, the Broughton from Aleghany. A pertinent reason why the Legislature holds its sessions to log role in the interest of certain corporations all explained. JOAQUIN MILLER DEAD Picturesque Author, Sol dier, Editor and Judge, Long III, Passes^ Away. After more than two years of failing health, Joaquin Miller, the “Poet of the Sierras,’' sometimes called the “Bums of America” and certainly one of the most picturesque characters in America, died at 3 o’clock Feb. 17 in one of the unique cabins on his beautiful estate in the Piedmont foothills, over looking San Francisco and the Golden Gate. His daughter Juanita and his aged wife were at his side when he died. For the last six weeks he had been bedridden and since last Thurs^iay had been unconscious. The poet was geventy-one years old. In the last years of his adventurous as well as famous career Joaquin Miller gave his whole attention to his California estate. His home was not in a mansion. There were separate cabins for each member of the family, assuring every member complete privacy and independance. All met for meals in another cabin. In season the grounds were filled with bowers of flaming flowers, and stately cypress and cedar trees graced all the paths and ayenues. On the hillside directly overlookmg San Francisco giant trees could be seen arranged in the shape of a huge cross. And on this hillside the poet had erected a pyramid to Moses, a turreted tower in memory of Robert Browning and a larger tower monument to John C. Fremont. Here also he built of solid masonry a funeral pyre, and the directions in his will are said by close friends to instruct his survivors that his body shall be placed in the hollow atop of the masonry under a pilling of cedar bows and at dawn of his fnneral day be cremated. The inscription on this pyre and tomb reads: “To the Unknown.” No Need to Stop Work V/hen the doctor orders you to stop work it staggers you. I can’t, you say. It would be a pity if no legislative headway in the movement for re striction of concealed weapons were made because of the objection that to fix a minimum punishment might wrong boys who imitated pistol-car- rying men. Why not cut the ground from under this objection by provid ing that for defendants under 21 the provisions of the law should becor e operative only upon a second convic tion for carrying concealed weapons or upon a second conviction without regard to the exact nature of the crime? FailinT even this, the Legis lature might declare by resolution the policy of jthe State toward ‘concealed weapons and, as a matter of moral’y countenancing and upholding enforce- nrent of the present law, urge judges to be less prodigal of clemency toward teose who offend.—Charlotte Oboerver. A GREAT MISTAKE. The Murder of Francis I. Madero ex-President of Mexico Sunday while being transfered as a prisoner under guard from his former palace to the penten- tiary, is an incident in Mexican National life that must have its reconing. Whether a civilized world consents to such with( hands off, or not, will not alter the effect of popular sentiment in concrete, agressive and revengful attitude. General Victoriano Huertu provisional President connived at the assination of Maderos brother, the very worst thin&« he could have done to encourage the troublesome spirit that is sweeping thrk)ugh Mexico. In the height of Napoleans power, he had a Bourbon Prince murdered, and he felt at that time he was powerful enough to do anything, but the mills of the gods ground on^ until the day came when he realized it was one of his biggest blunders. •Ad i February In London I'he gray straets of London are sweet er than the rose. The gray streets of London when the west wind blows. The wild wind, the fresh wind, brings home the spring again. And I turn my face to meet her in the softest rain. The tired folk and busy they put their cares away With “Never mind tomorrow, since life is good today.” They are wondering what ails them, the west wind blows so sweet. With a flash of green and silver in the saddest street. There’s dappled sky above us if the smoke would let us see, In dingy squares and crescents there’s a thrush upon the tree. The rain like little fingers comes with a soft surprise is smoothing out the wrinkles ’round the weary eyes. rain and the west wind that set the flowers to start They wash the grime from all the Roul, the grief from the heart. And who would you be meeting as you . walk the murky town spring that’s like a daffodil in a golden gownt girls beside the pavements they carry golden store Of wallflowers and hyacinths and vio lets galore. The soft speech of Limerick I heard as I went by. And the blue eyea of Ireland were like a glint of sky. The west wind is blowing on people stepping light; They wonder what is on them-they feel 80 queer and bright. The softest rain is falling, and while the west wind blows The gray streets of London are sweet er t^an the rose. —Katherine Tynan, in The Delineator. The maximum difference in elevation of land in the United States is 14,777 feet, according to the United States Geological Survey. Mount Whitney, the highest point, is 14,501 feet {above sea level, and a point in Death Valley is 276 feet below sea level These two points; which are both in Californid, are less than 90 miles apart. This difference is small, Ihowever, as com pared with the figures for As'a. Mount Everest rises 29,002 feet above sea level wheseas the shores of the Dead Sea are 1,290 feet below sea level, a total difference in land heights of 30,- 292 feet. Mount Everest has never been climbed. The greatest ocean depth yet found is 32,088 feet, at a point about 40 miles north of the island of Mindanao, in the Philippine Islands. The ocean bottom at this point is therefore more than 11 1 2 miles below the summit of Mount Everest. The difference in the land heights in Europe is about 15,868 feet. Road Tax For 1913 Due. Notice—The special road poll tax for the year 1913 is now due, ano payable until the first day of April. Under the old law the treasurer was paid a small commission for collecting and handling this fund. And heretofore I haye given that commission to those who looked after it in the different Townships. But now under the Salary law there is no provission made for any one to be paid any thing out of this fund. Therefore, unless some one wil volunteer to collect without charge, in the townships, I cannot put the bocks out as has been my custom. According by instruction from the County Com- mers., the books-will be at my office in the court house in Graham, and all persons desiring to pay will pay to me unless they find bome one else with the books.
