SATURDAY MARCH 1, 1005 A Ballad of Audax and Socia. A shocking tale I sing, my child (Prepare to shed a tear) Of one who witting fell from grace, Of pipes and love and beer. Of sweetly pretty, pretty Docia Ann And Audax Bump, a wicked man. When Audax Bump was very young To Sabbath school he went, A Golden Text within his heart, Within his hand a cent (The latter for to pay the way Of missionaries to Cathay). Now next to him there used to sit, Up in the Infant Class, Our heroine, Miss Docia Ann, A saintly little lass. And Docia smiled at Master Bump In a way to make his heart go thump 1 One awful Sabbath morn, alack! Whilst all were bowed in prayer, Ah I Audax stole from out the room, And crept adown the stair. A wicked candy shop he sought And with his cent some taffy bought! The fatal downward step was ta'en; That morn he stole away, And worse and worse our Audax grew With every passing day. Before his twenty-second year He smoked a pipe and tasted beer. Ah, very much to blame was he, As I shall prove to you; For while the downward path he trod The higher way he knew. He felt he was a sinful man Whene'er he met Miss Docia Ann. He told her this when he proposed : "I smoke and take of beer, I am a very wicked man, Unworthy you, my dear." "You're very right, good sir," quoth she; "And I'm engaged to Thomas Tee." Then to himself 'tis passing strange The villain softly swore : "If just because I smoke a pipe And quaff a stein or more She scorns me" (thus poor Audax spoke) "I'm blooming glad I drink and smoke!"
