In ad dition to the trophy the winner or runner-up will have his railroad and Pull- Editor of the Pinehurst Outlook: I notice in your, resume of the pro ceedings at the Pinehurst Forum held oa Sunday, March 7th, the following glar ing mistakes: 1. You state that "the significant up shot of the whole evening talk was the substantial agreement of all the speakers regardless of religion and native locality,, in the solution recommended for the pre vailing unrest in Ireland: all advocated the establishment of an independent Irish Eepublic." 2. "Mr. Farley, a Catholic from the Northern Counties ." 3. "It was alleged by each speaker that 80 per cent, of all inhabitants of Erin desire a republic. ..... " 4. "Even the so-called Dominion so lution. .... .was viewed with disfavor by all the speakers." My reply to the above four quotations from your own resume are: 1. Both Mr. Farley and myself agreed, to speak with the understanding that ample time was to be allowed for a pub lie debate. I had to speak first and pur posely cut my speech short and merely touched on various aspects of the situ ation, leaving them to be developed in the debate. Eev. Father Sheedy allowed his Sinn Fein enthusiasm to grow into such boundless lengths that he occupied : both his normal speaking tjnie and also that intended for the debate. Mr. Far ley who spoke third had only a very few -minutes to express himself! I do not agree with the proposal to--make Ireland a free Eepublic. I do not think it would be beneficial either to her self, the British Empire or the United' States. A weak and defenseless Ireland would be a menace to the whole world,, situated as she is on the great trade routes between Europe and America As an Irishman, who loves his country I would be the very first to support an Irish Eepublic if I thought it would.be beneficial to mankind as a whole. Un- A1 i? x i. JT - j-ui Luuaieijr ur xurkiuiaieiy, as uio case may be, Ireland is so geographically lo- the protection of some great power. Complete colonial autonomy, or in other the Dominion of Canada, Australia, etc.,.. with the power and might of the British Empire in the background, is in my -opinion the only logical solution. 2. Mr. Farley is not a Catholic. He is a Protestant and Free Mason from the North of Ireland. He has asked me to make this fact clear. 3. I do not believe that 80 per cent, of the people of Ireland want a Kepublic- The last elections were no indication as ii ... . i me majority oi voters were terronzeu by the Sinn Feiners. I believe that given a fair chance the great moderate party in Ireland would carry the day for Dominion government. 4. This is' answered by the above re plies. Yours very truly, A. LOFTUS BEYAN, Capt. S. I. man fare, to andTf rom the GrandAlnerf can Handicap,, paid by the A. T. A. conditional upon his attending G. A. H. and competing in ther National Amateur Championship at single targets.
