John D. Chapman, of Greenwich, may have been eliminated from match play in the Spring tournament in the opening round, but you can’t dodge the fact that his 152 for the 36 holes was a most tidy performance.- And winning the quali fying round two years in succession is another feather of a gay plumage for his cap. . r——— O —■ ..... ; John Carley, of Easton, Pa., has a lot on John D. Rocke feller in certain respects, golf in particular. The well-known John D., at 85, only travels eight holes a day. Carley, at 81, goes from 18 to 36 and can spot the billionaire several shots in a match anytime. ~ —---o—— -- One of our good golfers, with a very short swing, was asked why the abbreviation in the stroke. He replied, “that he was in a hurry and didn't have time to go back any further/' -o Some 150 odd Tin Whistles and their guests sat down to their annual dinner in the club house on Tuesday evening last. Eberhard Faber, President of the Association, acted as toast master. The speaker of the evening was Major C. E. Rus sell, formerly of the U. S. Army Secret Service in France. His subject, a most interesting one, was “True Tales of Se cret Service." •-:—o There was a fine family party in the second round of the first division of the Spring event. Malcolm B. Johnson, met A. E. Johnson, his brother, the former winning 3 and 1. --o Mrs. John D. Chapman was the winner of the Silver Foil’s Ringer score tournament, held on the Number 1 course, with a card of 38-33-71. Mrs. E. Muntz was the winner in Class B. Mrs. Chapman’s card was unusually fine, especially coming in. It follows: Out 5-4-5-4-5-3-3-4-5—38 In 4-2-5-3-4-4-4-5-2—33—71 Mrs. Muntz: Out 5-6-6-6-5-3-4-4-6—45. In 5-3-5-4-6-5-5-6-3—42—87. Mrs. R. H. Barlow had the best ringer score on Number 3 course with a 39-40-79. Mrs. A. S. Sands won in Class B with a 55-62-117. Mrs. Barlow’s card: - Out 4-5-5-4-4-3-4-5-5—39. In 4-5-4-5-3-5-4-6-4—40—79. : ---O W. S. Carleton, of the Brae Burn Club, Boston, playing with A. A. Highlands, a club-ornate, and Wilfrid Ouimet, join ed the “Ace” Club by dropping his tee shot into the second hole of Number 4 course last week. The distance of this hole is 167 yards.
