She often dreamed of her hus band and she would sometimes get up in the middle of the night to see if i he wasn't walking about. Any little j disturbance caused her to be fright ened. One night mysterious raps were heard on the wall of . the sum mer hotel. ' "Great goodness," cried the fright- i ened woman In room 13. "I wonder If j that could be my departed husband?" I "No," growled the man In room 14, . "It's the people on the other floors I killing mosquitoes with their slippers." i Spats and Old Boot*. London Tit-Bits. , , AUTUMN A8TER8 ??We're all fond of the autumn," said the Red-Stalked or Purple-Stemmed As ter, "though some of us stay around longer than others of us ? If that is the correct way for me to speak. "I am well known and well liked, I believe. My name is as it Is because my stem is reddish. There are a num ber of flowers on various little stems from my one big stem and I'm of a vio let color or pale lavender color. ' "All of us are considered nice au tumn flowers and we have heard of people who are particularly fond of asters ? 'wild asters such as we are. "We have thin leaves which aren't very big, quite different from the leaves of our cousin, Large-Leaved As ter. "Those cousins, as you can guess, have large leaves. Their name tells you that, and then, I hatfe already told it to you, so now you know It twice. . "If you see them, and doubtless you have seen them, you will know that three times." "Ah, yes," said Billie Brownie, "I do know that bit of Information now that I have ^een those cousins of yours." Then Billie Brownie went and called on Late Purple Aster. The Late Purple Asters were larger flowers, with long, thin petals and yel "Nice Autumn Flower*." VJ low centers, and there were fewer flow* ers on these flower plants. Each little branch that went off from the main stem had but a single flower npon it, and the flowers were deep vio let blue in color. "VV^'re late in arriving," they said. "But we're late in leaving, too," they added. "You see," they told Billie Brownie, "we're very fond of brilliant coloring, and the autumn Is the time when the coloring is so wonderful. "Of course, when we arrive in the middle of the summer the coloring is beautiful,, for the harvest makes it so rich and lovely, and then the Golden rods are about, and they are so splen didly gay and bright in appearance. "Then the Black-l?yed Susans are about, and all of the different Aster rel atives are to be found in their differ ent home spots. "And from the middle of the summer on It seems to us as though the color ing grew more wonderful day 'after day, week after week. "When the autumn Is actually here, then it gets so that Its beauty Is be yond expression. "We wondered how It could b* so beautiful this year as, day after day. It did become more marvelous and the trees told us a secret and the shrubs and the vines said that the secret was one in which they shared, too. "But they told me we could tell the secret to any one really Interested in Nature. "And we can see that you are, Billie Brownie." "Oh, do tell me the secret," said Bil lie Brownie. "It will give me so much pleasure to hear it" "We asked the trees how It was that they grew lovelier each day and how It was that they could become so won derful. "It seemed to as that each day we could not see them any more beautiful, and yet they were more beautiful and we could tell that people felt the same way about them. <? . "People would say that the days were so wonderful that they could not describe them? that they had used up all their words. "And the trees told us this : " 'Late Purple Asters,' the trees said as they swayed In the breeze, 'we are Mother Nature's children, and we want to look our best for our mother before we take off our finery and go to sleep. 1 "'We are so pleased that she is pleased that we go on each day trying ^o look better and better, each of us doing the same. " 'We add a dash of color here or a dash of color there, and we just try to please her more and more and more. | And, as we try to please her more and j more and more, we keep improving ourselves and looking better add bet ter. "?You know this is the secret: When we receive praise which Is deserved from one we so dearly love we do bet ter and better and better. "Praise only makes ub want to show that we will not disappoint the one who thinks so well of us. We will be wor thy of that praise.' "That was the secret the trees told os," the flowers ended. And Billie Brownie thought It was a beautiful secret, but he was glad that til could bear the secret who were real ly interested in Fatur* IMPROVED UNIFORM INTERNATIONAL SundaySchool ' Lesson ' (By REV.
