The shade trees in the city of Ral eigh have added much to its attract tiveness in the past, cat there seems to be a decline in the manifested ap preciation of this fact. Occasionally a stately oak is hews do n, and there seems to be leas lingering regret than formerly. In various directions this forgetf ulness of the value of the trees is manifesting itself and gradually the pnblic is becoming accustomed to it and really fails to see what it looks at in this direction. The street rail way, the telephone and the telegraph people thoughtlessly, or possibly in a spirit of 4 don', care" run their guy wires around the limbs or the trunks of trees, sometimes the handsomest to be found, unnrindful of the fact that these wires fastened to trees in this way simply means death to the limbs or crunks around which they are wrapped The city officials should never allow a wire to be fastened to a tree unless thy are willing to give that tree np, and if it is so worthless as that it should be taken down and a young oue put in its place We do not appreciate the value of our trees as we should. A CRIME AGAINST SOCIETY. For quite awhile the secular press North and South has been teaming with notices, comments and descrip tions relative to that prize fight in Louisiana. This free advertise ment of this brutal business is a refutation to our claim of civiliza tion, and a prostitution of journalism, which to a great extent" is the moulding force of public thought and private character. The press of the country is responsible, to a large ex tent, for the popularity and the con tinuance of these degrading exhibi tions. If the papers of the country would refuse to publish any reference to them absolutely and do nothing more than let them absolutely alone, they would soon be forgotten, or if remembered at all, it would be with a sense of shame that such ever had such hold upon public attention. The nation wants reform upon this line. 1 he press has it in its power to stamp out this worse than "Span ish bull fight" business and the coun try ought to demand that it wield it. WILMINGTON QTJAP &NTININ6. The Wilmington Messenger, in re ply to a question asked by the Ashe Tille Citizen, says: "For the benefit of our contempo rary, the Messenger will say that Wilmington has promptly quaran tlned against all European ports and the quarantine will be rigidly en forced. Our health authorities will spare no efforts to keep out the plague and Wilmington feel's perfect ly secure in their hands. The heult of the city was never better than at present, and the city authorities are even pntting the city in a better sani tary condition than-ordinary circum stances warrant. We are not afraid of cholera coming here by vessel from foreign ports, and should there be a chance to get it by way of New York.we will quarantine against that city. We are on the defensive and full of confidence ' A communication from Benson, N 0., states that a white man named Joe Lassiter was killed on Friday by the blowing up of a saw mill at that place. . No other ; person was hurt The unfortunate Lassiter was from Dunn, N. 0., where he has relative, Wilmington Messenger. THE 8TEVEN80N RECEPTION THE PROGRAMME. The line of march will then be taken up Fayetteville to Capitol Square and Hillsboro street to St. Maiy's school, where the speaking will take place. .Any further details of the day which are decided upon later will be announced in due time. DANGER EVEN WITH QUARAN TINE. Newberne Journal. We are no physician, but it seems to us that the quarantine business in iNew York against the foreign vessels is conducted without that keen care fulness which should characterize learned medical men in guarding against the entrance of such a dread ful and desolating scourge as cholera. It seems from the telegrams that vessels on which there is cholera are stopped, but those on which there is none are allowed, after undergoing disinfecting treatment, to proceed without tarrying outeiJe the twenty days of prohibition. Tbe New York Herald has a tele gram from Chicago to the effect that a French woman there says her brother in-law who arrived in Chi cago Wednesday came over in a chip on which there were twelve deaths from which the surgeon called chol erine, and that the bodies were buri ed and that the vessel was passed and allowed to proceed to her dock. Mr. Chas. N. Hauer Of Frederick, Md., suffered terribly for over ten years with abscesses and running sores on his left leg. He wasted away, grew weak and thin, and w i obliged to use a cane and crutch. Everything which could be thought of was done without good result, until he began taking Hood's Sarsaparilla which effected a perfect cure. Mr. Hauer Is now in the .best of health.
